I only recently noticed, the audio does imply why listener would do so anyway. This event took place after the Sakura TV incident. A second Kira appeared and L lost a team member. With their love facing a greater challenge, its reasonable Listener would push to support L more directly.

And that Light gets a scolding from the listener he confessed to a while back. "I understand Light; loyalty to your partner is a luxury you can't afford"

I adore this take on L. Getting to spend more time with him has helped to elevate him narratively as Light’s thematic foil, even more so than in the original. His compassion and general levelheadedness are such good counterpoints to this Light, who shows his age and tilts his hand more readily than I recall. Also, this L is a very cute cinnamon bun. This is, of course, a critical point of my character analysis. I don’t want to be fridged to get at L. I just hope that in the moment of greatest need, I’ll remember I have teeth before the boy can reach for a pen.
