By writing his own name with the fate of "dies in his sleep 23 days from now", he made himself immune to any subsequent attempts to write his death - essentially, gave himself 23 days of immunity to Kira. So because he wrote away his own life, he was able to win before he died.

This is actually based on the 2006 movie version and not the anime! So it was actually based on Kenichi Matsuyama, Toda Erika and Tatsuya Fujiwara.So that's why Misa's hair is brown and not blonde.
