phillyslasher Thanks, it was superior to the DC-10 and if the two planes had not been launched at the same time or if , , , well there were a lot of factors that kept it from being a successful type. RR, for one. It was a beautiful aircraft. I had the good luck of having rode in one in an overnight flight to London.

I go back and forth between the L1011 and Dc-10 in terms of looks. The L1011 was way more reliable and the engines definitely sounded more refined. It's too bad planes are so boring and quiet nowadays.

The 787 would've only been a true dreamliner if it was designed purely by Boeing.. Ever since the merger of McDonnell Douglas they have left there poor safety inprint on any aircraft developed by Boeing from 1997 and onwards..

I flew 12 years with ATA, who by the way was the launch customer for Boeing's 737 with the winglets, on most flights I flew the L1011. The L1011 was the first a/c to land on U.S. soil under the reduced separation rules for arrival and departure, ordered to land in the Azores and informed we would be the first ever a/c ever to arrive in new rules. Skies where getting quite crowded. Call sign REACH!!!!

I think there is a case for 3 jet engined airline planes to come back into service. The A380, A340 and B747 are sometimes having trouble filling their planes by at least 80%. To break even, you usually need 65% full, and a decent profit, 85%. Since engines are the most expensive part of the plane to maintain, 3 engines would be cheaper to maintain than 4. A plane to carry 350-380 people is the ideal load of a booking for one airplane. The Lookheed TriStar was the ideal airplane for the North Atlantic routes. And even back then, they were quite fuel efficient

They are about as obsolete as, say, a Commodore 64 or Atari computer. A TriStar is a kerosene guzzler, compared with an A330 or B777. They now are 30 years old and can only be sold by the kilogramme now.

+TheWuschelMUC Wow! it takes a genius to come up with that! We all know the TriStar is an old airplane -- if you don't have any appreciation for history or this airplane why are you here? When and why did Hong Kong change from VR-xxx aircraft registration to B-xxx?
@ThePolishGuy1989
@ThePolishGuy1989 10 жыл бұрын
If you're still interested, aircraft registered in British colonies and overseas territories use two letter prefixes starting with V (ex: Bermuda's VP-B** registrations). When Hong Kong's sovereignty was transferred from Great Britain to China (PRC) in 1997, aircraft registered with the VR- prefix were re-registered with the B- prefix used in the PRC. It is worth noting that while aircraft registered in the PRC proper contain the B- prefix followed by 4 numbers, aircraft registered in Hong Kong have the B- prefix followed by 3 letters, a remnant from the British system. Some countries retained the system in its entirety after independence from Great Britain (like India with its VT-*** registrations).

Today's commercial airline industry will no longer permit three-engine wide-bodies like the class of the DC-10's, MD-11's or the L1011's. Their prowess and beauty are unquestionable, yet their operating cost wouldn't tolerate all our wishes that they'd come back to the sky. Thus, what we have is the today and future realities: the twin-engine giants such as B777 or B787, or the four-engine super giants like A380 and B747-8 (the four-engine giant, like A340, is a big failure commercially). Fuel consumption does matter!

Remember that DC10/MD11 suffer technical issues deliberately occulted by Douglas that ended by human losses and the beginning of the end for Doug. Also I'm not sure that engine power have somthing to do with the fact that last operators of DC10/MD11 are freighters companies. Will more bet on insurance cost of those planes in pax config and/or very bad public image of them. (in fact links between power and number of engines is complet bullshit)
@javacup912
@javacup912 8 жыл бұрын
+Edi Utama I think it's more politics than economics. The cost of maintaining an ETOPS fleet to fly the same routes of three engine aircraft is very closely equal the cost of keeping the trijets, which obviously were not restricted by ETOPS requirements. The added safety of being able to substantial better safety margin when an engine failed, cannot be overemphasize. Of course, the 3-engine airplanes provided a training/transition environment by pilots as many (including myself) started in the flight engineer position,

It was very lucrative, carried fresh produce back up to Brunei. We only used the 2 -100s that CX bought directly from Lockheed as they had a 450,000lb MTOW and center tank fuel.
