Really nice talk by Wilson. Sharding is a database centric technique that means partitioning the database into smaller and much more manageable parts which are referred to as data shards. I don't recall seeing this technique being used outside the database community ...

It is used in distributed ledger/ cryptocurrency domain. I guess you can call it also database usecase.
