what song or album by u2 do think i'd like? Is the joshua tree really good? I might have to check it out. I'm so used to the live stuff now that I think I need to hear some studio material now.
@lauraallen552 ай бұрын
Okay, you asked lol! This is a hard one for me because The Joshua Tree is probably what the average response would be as their 'best' album, but it would be about 5th or 6th for me (and many other hardcore U2 fans). It's also hard for most hardcore U2 fans, including me, to come up with studio songs because they sound much better live on all but a handful of songs. The Joshua Tree songs, especially the first three: Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and With or Without You will likely get a lot of views, and Still Haven't Found is one of the few that is better in the studio. There is a 'live' music video of that that is not actually live but rather the studio recording and I would recommend that one for sure. Another big song of theirs that I like better in the studio (as do other big fans typically) is One. One was huge, and would rival the top three songs on JT for views. There are three music video versions of that one. It was the song Bono wrote about them as they were almost breaking up as a band. Honestly, I would do one of the studio music video versions of One before anything else. Then, I would do Where the Streets Have No Name music video. The only songs I could come up with that sound better in the studio than live, and I tried hard lol! Btw, afterwards, I checked to see what U2 subreddit thinks, and they overall came up with the same songs I did. One I Still Haven't Found... All I Want Is You Unforgettable Fire Bad A Sort of Homecoming Numb Generally speaking, I think the songs from The Unforgettable Fire sound better in studio as do the songs from Pop. Otherwise, their albums for the most part sound better live. Much better... Sorry for the novella, Lee ❤🤓

The Joshua Tree is great, especially In God’s Country and Running to Stand Still. The albums Boy, War, Achtung Baby, and All That You Can’t Leave Behind are also worth full listens. There is a 4-song album(? it’s kind of ‘leftovers’ from Unforgettable Fire) called Wide Awake in America that has stellar live versions of the songs Bad and A Sort of Homecoming. Definitely worth a listen or 20.

They ruled for years. Hit songs and spectacular concerts. I don’t know why there aren’t more reactions to their songs and concert videos. They even wrote and performed a song with BB King called ‘When Love Comes to Town’ My favorite album is ‘October’. Which was not well received at the time. Certainly not the favorite of most U2 fans, but I love it. First track ‘Gloria’ is not about a woman. It’s a praise to God. A minor hit with a good video.

Just as they were starting "Bullet The Blue Sky" a Jet Airliner flew RIGHT OVER the stadium, about a mile or two from the normal flight path. Don't know how they pulled that one off. The crowd was in a frenzy after that. Stellar show.
@alexkasper50292 ай бұрын
I'm a massive U2 fan and ZooTV is easily my favorite thing the band has done. The inspiration for the ZooTV came from a few places. It was the first tour where the band would be playing in massive outdoor football stadiums instead of smaller arenas and they were very conscious of making sure that everyone in the venue had an amazing experience regardless of where their tickets were. So they wanted to put on a show that would be engaging in larger venues. U2's show designer Willie Williams deserves a lot of credit for how amazing that tour was bc he really was instrumental in both the concept and how it was executed. He has been with the band since 1983 tour for the album War and is a key collaborator in general, but ZooTV was really his baby. The band recorded Achtung Baby in Berlin when the Berlin Wall was coming down and there were these East German cars called Trabants abandoned all over the place. They were complete trash, the panels were mostly resin with sawdust and cotton wool instead of metal. I believe it was photographer Anton Corbijn and Brian Eno's idea to collect them and paint them as art pieces, but it was Willie Williams' idea to use them as light sources on the tour. After brainstorming various concepts, the band decided it would be cool to have the tour function as a traveling TV station of sorts that could feed in TV via satellite. They wanted to play with the idea of propaganda and how TV blurred the lines between entertainment and news. While channel surfing you could get footage of war next to films, cartoons, and music videos. How does that impact what is real and we see as entertainment? That provided the jumping off point for a lot of the visual content on the tour. The band also had gone through the 80s being known as extremely earnest and serious and that started to feel stifling. They wanted to shake loose of that image and in general Achtung Baby was meant to be a complete reinvention, their attempt to "cut down The Joshua Tree" and do what was least expected from them. They accomplished that with great success. In general the music U2 made in the 90s was so different from what they did in the 80s and it is why their catalog is so varied and dynamic. They weren't interested in doing what was safe or expected, they wanted to push themselves in more creative directions. As an album, Achtung Baby really broke new ground for the band and they wanted the tour to continue in that vein. Bono was interested in the idea of playing characters, putting on the persona of a stereotypical rock star. So he took Elvis's leather suit, Lou Reed's sunglasses, and an extra dose of swagger and came up with the character of The Fly. For the North American part of the tour, ZooTV Outside Broadcast, Bono created the character the Mirrorball Man, who was a flashy preacher who was selling commericialism as religion. Every night during the encore Bono called the White House trying to get through to President Bush Sr., which he never did. The prank stopped being fun when Bill Clinton was elected bc he actually wanted to talk to them lol. There were antics like that throughout the tour. During one concert, while flipping through the channels he came across an ad for a pizza place and ordered 10,000 pizzas, telling them to bring as many as they could and sure enough during the encore a pizza delivery guy was swallowed by the crowd in an attempt to deliver the pizzas! When the band was on a tour break in Dublin, The Edge, who was recently divorced, ended up staying in Adam's basement and was going through a hard time. He decided to start working on some music as a distraction and that led to the creation of the album Zooropa. It was produced and recorded during that break and was a big surprise given they were in the middle of touring Achtung Baby. The title Zooropa was Zoo + Europa and the European legs of the ZooTV tour were more focused on the issues facing Europe at the time. The EU had just been formed, but there were rumblings of fascism in many countries. The band became involved with a filmmaker Bill Carter who was on the ground in Sarajevo involved in getting aid to the people in the warzone and bringing the worlds attention to the genocide going on in Bosnia. U2 wanted to help in any way possible and ended up using their satellite link to feed in live interviews with Carter in Sarajevo. At one of the concerts at Wembley in London the feed was an interview with Carter and 3 women in Sarajevo, one was a Serb, one was a Croat, and one was Muslim and they expressed their desire to all be able to live in peace together. Carter was working with a firefighter in Sarajevo whose family was in Sweden. U2's management was able to find them and invite them to the concert so that they could be reunited via the satellite feed. There was another concert where they were able to connect a mother in the warzone with her son over satellite. She told Carter if she died at least now she was able to speak to her son one last time. These were super heavy moments in these concerts and at times threw off the vibes a bit, but the band wanted to do whatever they could to help. For the European tour, Bono created the character Mr. MacPhisto as the replacement for the Mirrorball Man. He was essentially the devil, as an elder gentlemen in the vein of "Sympathy for the Devil." He commented on the fascism that was growing again in Europe and often made a phone call to various leaders. (Bono had the remnants of his MacPhisto makeup in "Love Is Blindness" though he sweat through most of it and had thrown the devil horns into the audience 2 songs before during "Lemon".) This Sydney concert was on the last leg of the tour. Adam had been struggling with alcohol for a while and they had planned to film both nights in Sydney but the night before the first concert Adam had been out all night and ended up in the hospital in a coma that morning. Thankfully he woke up that day and was okay, but obviously he couldn't do the show that night and his bass tech had to fill in. Adam was back for the second night and they were able to film it. I think it is what makes that concert so amazing, the band was so relieved and happy to have Adam back. Adam has been sober since then. The performance of "One" from this concert is especially emotional and my favorite performance of the song. It was written on the verge of the band splitting up and has always held a lot of significance to them, almost losing Adam brought another layer of emotion to it. Sorry for the length of this comment. There is just so much lore to ZooTV and I'm a huge nerd lol. 🤓

For live performances, I would go for "Bad" from Live Aid. But my favorite U2 songs are "Red Hill Mining Town" (has to be the album version, as I said in another comment here), "The Unforgettable Fire", "A Sort of Homecoming", "Until the End of the World", "Zooropa", and "Where the Streets Have No Name". (Please skip the official music video for that one, it has ambient sounds drowning out the actual music.) In terms of which U2 song YOU (Lee) would like the most? I would probably say "Bullet the Blue Sky", lol. But you should definitely give the album version a listen so you can understand Bono's lyrics. And even though it's a studio recording, the production is really nasty. (In a good way.)

I think it should always be studio version first, then live. When you listen to the live version first, not only do you not get to hear the artist's final creative vision of their song, but you can't even fully appreciate the changes they decided to make in the live show.
@lauraallen552 ай бұрын
That seems logical. However, when it comes to this band and a few others, they are just so much better live. Considering how big their catalog is, it would take forever to hear a lot of their music. Lee heard a studio recording of one of their big more anthemic songs first, and wasn't super jazzed about it. Now, that he has heard so much of their live music and loves it, he is asking to hear what people recommend as worthwhile that is from their studio recordings. If you go on the U2 subreddit, you will find that their hardcore fans don't have much in the way of recommendations for studio songs over live. I can only think of a handful that aren't far superior done live. They are just one of the best live acts out there and that needs taken into consideration. I agree with most acts being heard studio versions first, but not in the case of U2, or for Springsteen for that matter - well, he's a mixed bag, but it doesn't seem necessary to have to hear his studio recordings first like it does with most other acts. Also, Bono changes how he sings from concert to concert, and even from night to night, so it isn't about hearing their 'final' creative vision in their case as it always changes. There is a reason that fans will ask for not just specific songs but from specific dates and venues with them - they are requesting the 'best' versions, and in most cases, everyone is in agreement. Slane Castle, Boston Elevation tour, ZooTV, etc.

Achtung Baby is my favorite U2 album. It's one of the best 90s Rock albums imo.

Agree on the Until the End of the World from ZooTV tour recommendation and Bono proving he's a GOAT frontman. But I love Rattle and Hum album. Hawkmoon 269, God Part II, and All I Want Is You are among my fav U2 tracks of all time.

I’m gonna bullet the past Lee. He was tired and sick. Give him a break. 😝🫡

Feels like U2's take on Stranglehold from the Nuge to me. It certainly borrows liberally on the rhythm. But that's OK. It's a lot better than Ted Nugent IMO.
