I think the energy for a distribution of charge has a 1/2 , because if you just do the integral you are counting the same element of charge twice (see Griffiths - Electrodynamics)

why is the radius of electron the Compton length? usually it is considered as the classical radius r0.

i guess cause the compton length gives you the minimum length on which you can locate a particle. it follows by the uncertainty priciple.

Sir said by the end , that we assumed that the electron is a ball of size of the compton wavelength and then calculated to find a term much closer to the previous calculated darwin term. So the assumption may be rough but still quite good. Also he a bit of insight into qft
