Interesting question! When I said "energy khatam" I simplified the reality. The fact is energy from one trophic level is utilised by species in second trophic level while carrying out day to day activities. The chemical energy stored in carrot is used by a Rabbit consuming it. When the Rabbit runs it uses the same energy and the chemical energy is converted to kinetic energy. In the process the Rabbit heats up thus also produce heat which is absorbed by the atmosphere. As a matter of fact mass is also a manifestation of energy. The mass that rabbit gains on eating carrot is also a form of chemical energy stored in carrot transforming to chemical energy stored in rabbit's body. So yes saying "energy khatam" is indeed simplification of reality but it is done to remain relevant to discussion on ecology instead of thermodynamics. Hope your query has been resolved :)
