In poetic meter, a "foot" is a basic unit of stressed and unstressed syllables. There are several types of poetic feet, but the most common ones in English poetry are: Iambic: This consists of a pair of syllables where the first one is unstressed and the second one is stressed. For example, the word "today" is an iambic foot because the stress falls on the second syllable: to-DAY. Trochaic: This is the opposite of iambic, where the first syllable is stressed and the second one is unstressed. For example, the word "happy" is trochaic: HAP-py. Anapestic: An anapestic foot has two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed syllable. For example, the word "understand" is anapestic: un-der-STAND. Dactylic: A dactylic foot consists of a stressed syllable followed by two unstressed syllables. For example, the word "poetry" is dactylic: PO-e-try. When we talk about tetrameter, we're referring to lines of poetry that have four of these metrical feet. So, in iambic tetrameter, you have four pairs of unstressed/stressed syllables per line. Other types of tetrameter can also exist using different combinations of poetic feet.
