My Father told me all about Italian charcoal makers on our farm in Co Wicklw Ireland during the 2nd world war . His description was so similar to this wonderful film . There is such skill attached to this work . It is a joy to see this skill . My Father spoke of when they fired it and how they regulated the air . They had a little hut and they watched it all the time . The process was judged by the amount and colour of the smoke . When the process was finished the smoke turned blue and there was a smell of vinegar .At this moment the air was blocked off and the cooling process began . The timber was got from coppicing which ensured regeneration of growth . All part of traditional sustainable forest management. These were and are great people . Thank you for a great production .

The old man with the blue apron is my great grand father, he died when he was 80 but not because of a respiratory disease. They’re working like this, with no face mask at all because they’ve always done it like this since they were very young, like their forefathers taught them. I read a lot of comments of people judging them because of this, but they grew up in a completely different period of time. They would go out living in the bush for months building their own shelters from scratch, and they could still grow a family and give their kids an education and good values that you no longer have nowadays. So wash your mouth out when you talk about them and their job.

They deserve all the respect and appreciation that they have learned the culture of their ancestors and they are happy with that. They do not care about masks and nothing as much as what is important for them to work and help their family.

Complimenti vivissimi a tutte le persone impegnate nella realizzazione e nella pubblicazione di questo prezioso video. Mi occupo di ricerche dialettologiche e avevo la necessità d vedere con gli occhi la descrizione delle fasi di lavorazione del carbone e della carbonaia per corredare immagini al testo di una vecchia intervista effettuata negli anni '60 a San Fratello, in prov. di Messina.Con queste immagini, avete colmato alcuni miei dubbi. Grazie e complimenti a chi contribuisce a conservare la memoria di questa fatica antica

This perfectly shows the problem is people are too soft these days. They are also brainwashed by the self interested safety industry to think you need to load up on the PPE every time you need to take a shit. I'm sitting here watching these men thinking the old Fella is probably 30 years at least older than me and I bet he could belt the crap out of me because he is a strong man with great fitness and endurance. I'll bet you would have to go to 100 Gyms to find a 20 Something that could work beside and keep up with any of these men just for one day let alone work 6 days a week, 12 hours as they probably do. I'm watching thinking that would be a lot of work trying to do that with my tractor and taking in the tons of wood and soil they are moving by hand. Those are REAL men and it amazes me they are not held in amazement and reverence at what they do. I guess those that would ridicule them are the same ones that have never done a single days hard work and therefore lack the ability to comprehend what these men are doing.

Funny comments from people who drive to work, switch a light or oven on, for thousands of years we saw more carbon go up from bush fires and power generators and battery builders. These beautiful people live off the land so very well I know where I would like my children to live and grow up....just sayin

عمل جماعي شاق ومهني ومبدع أفكر في تنفيذ هذه الفكرة ومحتاج الى مزيد من الشرح على كيفية أخذ مساحة القاعدة وعلاقتها بلأرتفاع وكيفية رص الخشب ومتوسط سمك القطعومادة الردم وفتحات دخول الهواء وزمن الحرق. من لديه معلومات عن هذه النوعية أرجو أن يتفضل بذكرها وتوضيح الجانب الايجابى والسلبى للكربنة وشكرا.

Perdon, no vi la parte donde prende el fuego dentro, en que momento lo hace y como lo hace? Cuando termina la pila, solo muestra que hace un fuego fuera, y luego hoyos por donde sale el humo.

Cdo veiamos el video le comentaba lo mismo a mi esposa.Las brasas de esa candela k vistes se le echan por la parte superior y centro a traves del hueco o cavidad que se deja vacia en el centro desde el comienzo cuando se levanta el horno, , esto enciende el horno como tal hasta k termina de quemar completo despues de varios dias (dá la pata).Cdo vivia en Cuba hice muchisimo carbón de aroma o marabù y ha sido el tiempo de mi vida que más duro he trabajado por eso siento grandisimo respeto por esos hombres de trabajo duro.

Que terrible, no se valora nada ahora, el trabajo del campesino, del pescador artesanal, del artesano, por todo se pide precios Vi una publicación de un colega chef y me duele Sean así con el esfuerzo y trabajo de ls gente Sabes acaso cuanto trabajo y tiempo emplea un hachero en cortar leña, dejar que se seque u oree un tiempo, hacer l domo tipo horno a puro barro y paja o hacer la zanja a pulso a pura pala y picota para la pelcha, poner cada trozo de madera ordenadamente, cubrir con paja, y tierra, dejar las correspondientes chimeneas y cada día ir a punzar para una quema pareja de la leña, despues de días y horas de trabajo arduo y tiempo exacto para obtener un tizón adecuado y no polvillo queda esperar se enfríe y con mucho cuidado de no hundirte y quemarte sacar cada palada de tierra e ir descubriendo el carbón con toda la exposicion al monoxido de carbono que implica contaminar tus pulmones por la exposición al humo y ollin, despues queda desparramar las brazas cuidadosamente para no romperlas y sacar el mejor producto y durable y que al prenderlo a los 15 minutos no tengas cenizas y un estallido de chispas. Es un trabajo que implica conocimientos, trabajo de ingeniería y mucho esfuerzo que lo mismo que tu conocimiento de cocinero quieres que te valoren cuando por ejemplo te mandan a hacer una torta y te dicen y tan caro cobras por harina y huevos? No puh viejito todo tiene su proceso, una lechuga no la produce la feria o el supermercado, son 1 mes de labrar la tierra y hacerla cultivable, hacer los almacigos, esperar 1 mes que esten con el tamaño suficiente para trasplante a otra tierra que tuvo un mes más de preparación y luego esperar 90 días para ser cosechada y con todo el trabajo que implica tratar ese cultivo, riego, abonar, desmalezar, hasta que llega a la mesa y la comes en una sentada, o a veces se terminan perdiendo, sin valorar todo el esfuerzo que hay detrás de ese producto Solo a modo de reflexión, si queremos que nuestro rubro se valore comenzemos por valorar el trabajo de los demás Lo digo porque soy nieto e hijo de campesino y se el esfuerzo que implica hacer carbón y que después con carretas a bueyes se tenía que viajar a las ciudades semanas enteras para comercializar el carbón Un datito de cultura que es necesario kzbin.info/www/bejne/eH7dYZyZlrVmaJI

@@billcoley8520 Dear good fella, I spent my childhood in the dirt sand and mud. Breathing smoke from a fire is as bad as smoking. Breathing soot and ash is not quite the same as playing in dirt or sand. If this stuff stains your close, imaging how stained your lungs would be.

@@alexrXX ..sixty years ago back in the old country, I knew two old men that did this particular work for living starting at age 10 with their fathers, to their late seventies, and continue to lived late in to their eighties... Talking about working hard and breathing carbon 10 - 12 hours every day...

Entendo ainda usar este metódo por tradição,mas é muito trabalhoso,muito sujo e demorado. Um forno de tijolos seria muito melhor e simples.

There is a loss of total heat energy. If you burn wood in a fire place and get heat energy for domestic use it will be doubled. Economical loss.

Charcoal burns hotter and cleaner, certain things need charcoal and would not work with plain wood, such as a forge.

Parabéns amigos, vocês são grandes guerreiros, vejo que essa forma de vocês fazerem carvão é muito trabalhoso, só faz quem for acostumado. Tenho alguns amigos que também fazem carvão, porém em fornos de tijolos que são bem mais simples, tiram de 80 a 100 sacas de carvão por fornada. Fica meu Like 👍

@@josericardojrteodoro8897 Amigo, esse sentimento de vira lata não representa o brasileiro. Vc tem que sair da caixinha e conhecer um pouco esse mundão. Na Europa ha muito mais leis e restrições que as que temos no Brasil. É por isso que a coisa funciona. Qdo vc deixa tudo livre, sem controle, é aí que nasce o problema. Quanto a bandidagem, não podemos resumir tudo à um único problema. As origens dessa bandidagem vêm de longe, o Brasil infelizmente é o país com maior desigualdade social. Eu sei que parece clichê, mas esse é um dos grandes causadores dos problemas que temos. Mas o assunto é complexo e não pretendo discorrê-lo aqui. Saudações

Parece petralha falando... tô falando de uma coisa aqui, e vem um Zé Ruela encher o saco... o nosso país estava mal governado e ainda há muito que consertar, mas esse papinho de controle, falta de controle... ah!.. vá!... desde que não seja ilícito ou imoral, o trabalho deve ser livre, senão cria uma bando de petista por aí...

Wellstone ... os que trabalham no campo é quem sabem das coisas: o sr é quem deve sair do vosso apartamento na cidade grande e ir ouvir as queixas lamentáveis do povo:... como exemplo..." ah!.. eu nem planto um pé de ipê, porque depois não posso cortar"... ( por exemplo, e porque teria de obter licença ambiental pra tal coisa, coisa que nem em sonho um pobre, no campo, consegue!)... quem tá na roça é que sabe... planta-se pra colher... cria-se pra abater e comer... planta-se árvore pra cortar pra lenha... pra fazer estaca... quem sabe um dia, depois de 20 anos, pra cerrar e fazer uma casa pro filho que casou e quer ficar no campo (quer melhor casa do que de madeira?.. mais ecológica?)... acho que vc é da turma que dá ouvidos à "pirralhas estrangeiras, cujos sonhos eu ajudei a destruir"!... né??

Anche io vengo da questa tradizione millenaria,i miei zii e il nonno dubbi tutti morti, per noi era una cosa normale a tal punto che era pesante il lavoro, ora che sono grande dubbi molto triste non aver conservato questa tradizione, mi viene da piangere, io da piccolo lo facevo, ma non mi ricordo i particolari della cottura, mi ricordo che andavano a controllare alla notte, mi sento veramenteb stupido

Mio Papa ha fatto questo lavoro per di più di 40 anni e non ha usato ne maschera ne casco di protezione e oggi e 78 anni come un ragazzo. Comunque mai ha portato legna su spalle si usano animali, mule di montagne.

Nel forno devi usare altra energia, piu' di quella che ti darebbe il carbone. In questo modo usi lo scarto combustibile prodotto dalla stessa distillazione, praticamente cosi' ottieni un carbone migliore in autoproduzione.
