It takes time to develop an area. My first few plays I just built and tried to make it work. Last time I took time. And MUCH TIME XD It's a gorgous, flourishing city. At least for my standards. I'm just at about 40.000citicens but I'm happy with the way it looks and also that traffic flow is at over 80% without despawning. It's a great game. And I'ts even free on Epic Games xD

So, I'm very amused that an actual LA City planner has already set this city up for crippling LA-style traffic later on in the game by having a dense grid of 4-way intersections. I know city planners are not roadway engineers, but I'd be very interested to see how she deals with late game where traffic is the number one concern for the city.

It's probably because she's new to the game, doesn't know all the toolsets/functionality, and was allowed to play for like an hour :P Like she said, professional vs game experience are two very different things ;)

@@elise3455 It's not really a game function though, most real modern developments try to minimize 4-way intersections because they not only create traffic, but dramatically increase fatal collisions (which is something that's not even in the game) These probably aren't things city planners think about in America though, usually developers and road engineers deal with it. In some parts of the world like Japan where zoning is very relaxed they have to plan more carefully or you'll get chaos quick (and they still have freeways going through buildings).

@@chrissorreda4982 The reason that we don't use roundabouts is kind of complicated. I think that people would learn to drive them without issue. There's a video on KZbin that expands why. There are areas where they are more common in the US but they're rarely found where they're needed.

Yeah, i feel that's a much better use of these kinds of professionals in these types of videos. They should only do these kinds of building a city themselves videos if they have an actual long time player of the game there with them to do the gameplay stuff while the planner does their job of planning. Maybe could be interesting to have city planners play the game alongside a civil engineer.

Somehow this is reminding me of someone on Reddit who said they saved up one billion dollars in Cities Skylines game money before they tried to build their first tunnel - since real tunnels are crazy expensive - and then they built their first tunnel and just about cried. Many cities don’t have a good transportation system, LA is good in US standards when it comes to just how many bus lines there are as well as how much they intersect making it easier. The metro is small I know, but for a VERY car dependent city it’s doing good as they are adding or expanding metro lines, it’s also way more cleaner than the metro in NYC 🤣

I think these videos would be really interesting to see if in the video you had the city planner alongside a veteran Skylines player. to handle the actual mechanical play of the game while the planner makes all of the choices. As it would allow for the cities to be built more accurately to the planners ideas as the veteran player would know the best way in the game to implement those ideas and offer suggestions of the tools available to the planner.

They should have at least taught her some of the mechanics of the game... Like how electricity, water, and sewage works, as well as some of the basic mass transportation options and services so she could at least have a general idea of things to expect from the game and maybe plan around those things. A little help would definitely have aided her. Would definitely love to see her play again with a more experienced outlook.

This game gets more realistic when you start to use mods. Mods like TM:PE and the move it mod (and many, many other mods) can give a whole new dimension to the game. Combine that with the DLC’s (for example the Industries DLC) and you can build pretty realistic cities. But in the end, it’s a video game, not a city planning tools. There will always be concessions to be made. Like the mixed use zoning. You can’t have two different types of usage in one building. But you can place commercial within a block of residential zoning. That way you can mix zoning to some extent. You’ll still have the benefits of mixed zoning (like walkability). The game is set up from the idea that a city first starts out as a small village and over time grows larger and larger and eventually becomes that metropolis. So the set up of the game, where your village is just “plopped off off an off ramp” isn’t that far out, keeping in mind that once your town needs it, you’ll extend the freeway to where it needs to go. I hope she keeps it up and looks at what you can actually do with this game. Maybe try her hand at it some more. Right now she hasn’t experienced the all the game has to offer, not even close. Not even a little bit.

Interesting that she pointed out that we shouldn't put housing next to the freeway, when in reality what happened is that we tore apart neighborhoods to put freeways in and bumped them up against people's homes. Of course we all know that freeways don't even belong within the city though so that is another aspect to this.

City planners bring a lot of skill to the game. However, something you have to take into considerations is the timing of the cities needs. Instead of rushing to get everything the city needs right away you have to follow the pace in which the game (the city) demands those needs. Hence the milestones that unlock with Populations. Also unlike real life the powerlines only need to connect to the power grid and the houses/commercial/industry spread that power. So need for power lines to be connected to streets and no need for water pipes to be under roads.
