This appears to be the ballet composed by Hertel. There are interpolations "Piano Pianissimo" beginning as in Lanchbery/Hérold composer of "le Muletier" " Le Pré aux Clercs" etc., also "L 'Arlésienne" Bizet (flute and harp). The Siberian Ballet production (Hertel) (tour) had the clog dance with Dame Simone usually played by a man, swapping shoes for clogs to perform it. In the absence of the complete true Hérold score so far, the original (short) (1789) ballet based on popular tunes is on KZbin from the Opera de Nantes.

Petipa was one of the original choreographers but ballet was originally created by Jean Dauberval. Since this is Bolshoi from the time of their prolific choreographer Grigorovich, this version is his. Of course probably with elements of other choreographers.

BytomGirl - Hi BytomGirl! So good to see you again! Yes! I’m enjoying this ballet, and the music makes one feel happy! However, overall, I’m NOT a happy camper because my Pacemaker Implant recovery is too slow for me! I’m so used to flitting around all day but...now I just kinda sit around most always! lol. How have you been? Luba

Hello my friend.. please be patient. I too am stuck most of the time and can't do what I used to after I sustained back injury in the spring. Recovery takes time so don't get discouraged. As for this ballet, I like two versions, this one and the one from Mikhailovsky with Nikolai as Widow Simone and his ex-student/partner Angelina Vorontsova as Lisa. The chickens there are so funny. And of course Nikolai is great as always. He will dance it again next year. I saw his rehearsals . He is still wonderful.

@@saltator1802 its obviously very difficult to rebuild the original version but ashton version (1960) seem to be a good historical synthesis. it includes various evolutions of this ballet, including parts of petipa version.

@@r.r.c7692 Very true, but people are unfortunately under the impression that Ashton's was the "original" because that is what they know. A good attempt at a reconstruction of the 1789 version has been done by Ivo Cramer, here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6DOg42Hiq2XndE

@@r.r.c7692 I much prefer Ashton's versión, but I enjoyed this one too. In Ashton's version the part of the mother is played by a male dancer, which renders it funnier. If I recall correctly, he danced the part himself (Ashton playing the mother).

Where's the clog dance? Which composer is this? There are no bird calls at the beginning. I saw an excellent Russian production of the version composed by Peter Ludwig Hertel 1817-1899 on tour in the U. K.. This had a clog dance not the same as the arranger John Lanchbery's just different. We really need an unarranged version of the Hérold . It's one of the earliest ballets. Why employ arrangers? Herold, Messager etc. were capable composers. Lanchbery in a letter wouldn't even reveal the identity of the composers he purloined for "Tales of Beatrix Potter".

nothing like the ashton . its not half as moving and even some of the music is different . Ashtons version always had a man playing widow simone. much more fun. Nadia Nerina and David blairs version is the loveliest piece of light hearted romance on the planet, Michael Colemand and Leslie Collier. Russians tend to over do it. This is supposed to be humerous but in a dlicate way.

Help. I have loved and watched ballet ever since I saw Rudolf Nureyev practicing in an aircraft hangar in Melbourne when he toured with Margot in 1964. The Bolshoi is incomparable. BUT - in this version the maid is a male dressed as a female. Please, why could the Bolshoi not have used a female dressed as a female? It completely destroyed the role, for me. Is there a reason?
