I was an Arizona State Parks ranger for 15 years and sadly, have seen my fair share of fires. Born in California, I've mountain biked since before they were called mountain bikes. Since I haven't owned a car for years & years & years and have to ride through ALL weather conditions day after day, I can finally say at age 65 and having been a member of most American political parties, WITH AUTHORITY: 1) US - It is not the politicians. IT'S US! WE are the ones who can't relax our grip on a convenient lifestyle, NO MATTER HOW HIGH THE COST, and we'll vote for ANYONE who tells us they'll fix it. 2) PHYSICS - Until you've attempted to extinguish a wildfire yourself, or tried administering a "controlled burn", you do not even possess a FAINT notion of the power of high winds.... or ANY wind. Add to that the sheer PHYSICS of trying to move that much water uphill during multiple simultaneous catastrophic events which require shutting off power to pumps even as water lines are being severed in the destruction and, well if that needs explanation, you're just exposing your own stupidity. sorry. 3) GETTING HOTTER - I don't really care who you vote for or actually, ANYTHING about you. I keep to myself. I'm that old guy you've seen riding a mountain bike down the street since you were a kid. Call it "climate change", or a "hoax", or whatever you want... don't matter - IT'S GETTING HOTTER. In my racing days, training for the Leadville 100 & the Pikes Peak hillclimb, I can remember the thermometer hitting 97 degrees! It was Denver's hottest day in 1997 and it made the news! Last year here in Denver, CO, we had SIX DAYS that were 100° or hotter. IT'S GETTING HOTTER. Just this once, believe what the old man keeps telling you... GETTING HOTTER

That is how it's going to be over the next 50 to 100 years. What Mother Nature is about to throw at us will always outpace our catch-up planning efforts bec we didn't stop the cycle when we could.

If Californians allow Newsom and Bass to remain in office after this, then they deserve what they are getting. It is because of Newsom's / Bass' terrible policies and completely ignoring the need to protect people and property first that is directly and 100% responsible for the devastation of this tragedy. How much did Newsom spend on that electric train? And how much did he spend on fire preparedness and sensible forest management? How much did he spend on basic infrastructure so the hydrants wouldn't be dry? How many gallons of water did he divert to the ocean? How many damns did he destroy completely ignoring any kind of water shedding? How much did he spend on homelessness that still isn't accounted for? You couldn't do any better dude. It isn't on the government 100% it is on the people and the insurance company! It's their house not the governments.

@@kamrannia5859 So it WASN'T the government who cut the fire department funding to throw more money away into the homeless problem, it wasn't the government who mandated back-burning of dead woodland/plants had to stop for environmental reasons and wasn't the governments fault the underfunded fire department couldn't battle the fires because the fire hydrants are empty! It's because of them the insurance companies cut cover from fire BECAUSE of the massive risks (They actually do risk reports because they need to know what the biggest risks are) and the mandates from government Lest we forget it seems at least a large swathe of fires was started from a homeless dude on a bike with a blowtorch!

Trump fails to get an infrastructure package passed in 2018 (despite it being "infrastructure week" every week), denies climate change, takes bribes from Big Oil, pulls out of the Paris Agreement, makes asinine comments about raking forests and it's the guy who doubled the state's forest management budget, entered into multiple water management deals over the years, acknowledges climate change and budgets money to combat it that's the issue? That's rich. Laughable but rich. Also, firefighting, disaster response and municipal infrastructure are first and foremost a local government issue. I'd say, "nice try," but it was just lame.

Altadena was lower middle class / middle class small city. The winds carried the embers far, far from the canyon and burned teachers and gardeners' homes to the ground and many, many mom and pop businesses. This isn't just rich people living in the Pacific Palisades.

They should cap the value of houses at 1.5 million. Build more expensive homes than that at your own financial risk.
@Rorchak_B60Сағат бұрын
Housing costs are dictated by labor and material cost as well a a meriad of other factors. You cant cap housing prices without capping the economy as a whole. Its been tried and always fails as it creates a casade of issues. Even straight up communist economies like China cant reign in their housing costs. What i'd prefer seen done is they should prevent or heavily penalize private equity (Blackrock etc) from buying up all the single family homes and pricing consumers out to creating a renters market.

Somebody in power needs to stand up and speak about the obvious truth.. The funding was cut, the reservoirs empty, the tunnels collapsed and weather controlled through cloud seeding! My heart breaks for all those affected, I pray that the residence of LA get global support to get emergency accomodation, food, clothes, medicines etc I also hope and pray that the obvious failures of the official governance systems are forced to answer to the residence, especially those with lost loved ones.

Impressive though it is, is it really necessary for journalists to fly to every event to report on it? Use stringers: locally based journalists instead. Fewer air miles. We’ve got to sop excessive air travel.
