This wasn't originally a song for the Volunteers in Spain. It was actually made in 1919 to support the Red Guards, formations of armed workers which occupied factories.

Anti-Fascist ≠ Communism Just to make clear that monarchists, republicans, and all those that werent right extremists were partisans. Then theres also those who only cared about their families and the future of Italy, and not politics. As a monarchist i hate fascism, remember that Mussolini forced out King to make him prime minister.

The "repubblicans" were the fascists in ww2. This is not supposed to be some whack take: during the Civil War after capitulation, mussolini s state was called "the Italian social Republic" while the communist brigades fought under the coalition with monarchists in the south. I understand that every left winger is inherently anti monarchists but in this specific piece of Italian history calling oneself republican means you side with mussolini

1)as you can immagine communist found themselfes in a strange situation, after the armistice most of them wanted the head of the king (who let the fascists settle in)on the other hand there were liberals and monarchist who actually supported the crown, so many were scared it would cause division among the allied forces. So the chairman of the pci Palmiro Togliatti, in Salerno (provvisional Capital of liberated italy) decided( i dont know if he decided it on its own or if it was a order from stalin) that the communist would fight side by side with monarchist and liberals to eradicate fascism, and that the matter about to maintain or not to maintain the monarchy would be decided in a referendum after the war. In the referendum communist obviusly voted for the republic not the monarchy and they won. so it is safe to say that communist were not monarchist they just fighted with all of the antifascist forces to liberate italy. 2) fascism was created in milan in 1919 and the first program was called the "san sepolcro' s program" (named after the square in which it was read). at first fascism presented itself as a patriotic, republican, anti-clerical ,anticapitalistic and antisocialist movement. the movement at the time was called "fasci di combattimento" led by mussolini and it applied from the start tactics of terror and violence agaist political enemies also they were used by owners and bosses to sabotage worker movements or strikes(during the "biennio rosso" 1919-1921). then in 1921 the movement became a party the PNF "partito nazionale fascista" and the party redesigned itself, it became monarchist, nationalistic, clerical, and it lost the anticapitalist part and after the golpe in 1922 mussolini came to power and in 1925 after the promulgation of the "leggi fascistissime") it became the totalitarian tiranny that for 20 years terrorized italy. After the armistice mussolini decided to name the RSI republic because he wanted to appeal to the fascist that remembered the republican past of the movement( note that the republic was still a dictatorship). so no ,mussolini wasnt a republican. my english is not very good(i am italian), my knowledge of that part of history mostly comes from books and documentaries, so if i said something stupid let me know.

The Italian Social republic supporters were called "Republicchini" and not "Repubblicani".
