Definitely not what he was looking for in Whiplash though. He was looking for someone he could manipulate and gaslight into being the virtuoso he wanted.

@@jasonstephens6050 "manipulate" & "gaslight" are some strong words, Fletcher was neither of those per se, he simply had vicious/extremist standards that could only be met by a raw and relentless talent. Which is what he was searching for.

As a jazz pianist, I would know. He was meant to play the set list, which are usually, in fine restaurants, slow and smooth jazz. He is clearly a performer who must of Been a concert performer, not a lounge player.

this is such a powerful scene, i love how the audience shares this very very special moment and takes the perspective of mia just to get slapt in the face when seb is ignoring her and rushing out of the restaurant you just gotta hate and love him at the same time... simply beautiful!

@@Lowbudgetsports He acts convincingly. Whatever parts show his hands or his face while playing, he does an excellent job of it. While his playing might not actually sound that great, it's not a piano double they're using, it's Ryan and the single long shot is the evidence.

In real life, these musicians are just asked to avoid certain genres to fit the setting but never limited to what they can play. Of course, stricter contracts could be out there but I do hope people give musicians their freedom as it is an art.

Little fun fact, he learned to play piano specifically for this movie. The amount of practice and the level of talent that he has to to be able to play like that so soon after learning the piano.

I used to hear this song a lot on my trip to SF to meet a 'friend'. We drove down to LA, visited some la la land locations, had fun and ultimately had my heart broken. Whenever i hear this song I'm reminded of those memories. I used to cry about it but not anymore. But i still have fond memories i'll always hold dear to my heart.

“According to composer Justin Hurwitz, all the piano performance featured in the film was first recorded by pianist Randy Kerber during pre-production. Ryan Gosling then spent two hours a day, six days a week in piano lessons learning the music by heart. By the time filming had begun, Gosling was able to play all the piano sequences seen in the film without the use of a hand double or CGI.”

I am sorry but there’s no way in hell he achieved that level of piano virtuosity In such a short time, even if he practiced 2 hours a day for 3 months straight! There are people who practice years and cannot play like that.

Michael DiGiacomo I do believe the fact that he copied the correct hand movement and rough hand placement on the piano. Is just there’s no way he could play that after a few weeks or months of practice, that’s all. :)

Yes. Aftet it's two ways of works. Let a lot of liberty to the person you employ / the artist in this case Or just say "You do this set list and this is all" I think if you want to keep someone in very long term you nees to trust him and let some liberties In this case it appears like it was the second option. Do the set list :D

Talk about a meet cute. Aside from the less pleasant elements of it, just the fact alone that she was drawn to his music is so powerful. When he started playing from his soul, it called to her, and she responded. Nobody else could feel the passion and the love he poured into this song, but she could. Because they’re kindred artistic spirits.

Played this for my school talent show. Not the deck the halls part tho. I was going to if it was around Christmas :) it was grades k-8 talent show. I’m 7th and everyone was blown away! I felt really proud.

Marco’s Career It’s just scales mostly. I had a few months to prepare. Just practice. I started slow and then progressed. Also I used sheet music. Tbh, it was kind of sloppy and could’ve been better but I pulled it off.

Honestly, Sebastian deserved to get fired. He had a specific job to perform Christmas music that night, and had been given a warning not to stray from the playlist. He was too pretentious to just do his job right and instead chose to force his music on the patrons. J Jonah Jameson went too easy on him, frankly.
