Au Pays Basque, les traditions ont la vie longue. Durant la nuit du Mardi Gras, dans la petite ville d'Altsasu /Alsasua en castillan, (Navarre, Espagne) et seulement dans cet endroit-là, a lieu un carnaval qui remonte à la nuit des temps. Réputé barbare, sauvage et violent durant la dictature, Franco l'a même fait interdire. Depuis les années 80, il renaît de ses cendres. Avant d'entamer la période du Carême, les habitants du village font revivre des personnages de la mythologie basque. Personnage essentiel de ce carnaval, mi-homme, mi-taureau, les momotxorros s'enduisent de sang avant d'enfiler, au son ancestral de la txalaparta (ces planches que l'on frappe en rythme), leurs habits de bêtes. Ornés de peau de brebis, affublés de longues cornes, le visage et les bras ensanglantés, ils parcourent les ruelles armés de fourches, tentant d'effrayer la population de leurs cris tonitruants et indécents. Ils dansent et complotent autour d'un immense feu. Puis, au son d'une corne, ils retournent déambuler dans la ville accompagnés du bouc maléfique (Aker beltz) et des sorcières (Sorginak) ainsi que d'autres personnages mythologiques. Le jour du Carnaval, dans cette atmosphère qui semble irréelle, la population renoue avec ses traditions les plus ancestrales mais également avec la véritable signification du Carnaval. Ce rituel qui paraît sorti d'un autre âge est aussi l'occasion d'une grande fête, la débauche de cette nuit de délire ouvre la période d'ascèse du Carême, la nuit laisse place au jour, le mal au bien.

En el País Vasco, las tradiciones tienen una larga vida. Durante la noche de Mardi Gras, en el pequeño pueblo de Altsasu / Alsasua en castellano (Navarra, España) y solo en este lugar, tiene lugar un carnaval que se remonta a los albores del tiempo. Reputado bárbaro, salvaje y violento durante la dictadura, Franco incluso lo ha prohibido. Desde los años 80, renace de las cenizas. Antes de comenzar la temporada de Cuaresma, los habitantes del pueblo reviven personajes de la mitología vasca. Carácter esencial de este carnaval, mitad hombre, mitad toro, la mancha de sangre momotxorros antes de ponerse, al sonido ancestral de la txalaparta (estas tablas que uno golpea al ritmo), sus ropas de animales. Decoradas con piel de oveja, adornadas con largos cuernos, sus rostros y brazos ensangrentados, deambulan por los callejones armados con horcas, tratando de asustar a la población con sus gritos atronadores e indecentes. Bailan y planean alrededor de un gran incendio. Luego, al sonar una bocina, regresan a caminar por la ciudad acompañados por el macho cabrío (Aker beltz) y las brujas (Sorginak) y otros personajes mitológicos. En el Día del Carnaval, en esta atmósfera que parece irreal, la población está volviendo a sus tradiciones más ancestrales, pero también al verdadero significado del Carnaval. Este ritual, que aparece desde otra época, es también la ocasión de una gran fiesta, el debate de esta noche de delirio abre el período de ascetismo de la Cuaresma, la noche da paso al día, del mal al bien.

In the Basque Country, traditions have a long life. During the night of Mardi Gras, in the small town of Altsasu / Alsasua in Castilian (Navarre, Spain) and only in this place, takes place a carnival that goes back to the dawn of time. Reputed barbaric, wild and violent during the dictatorship, Franco has even banned. Since the 80s, it is reborn from the ashes. Before beginning the season of Lent, the inhabitants of the village revive characters from Basque mythology. Essential character of this carnival, half-man, half-bull, the momotxorros smear of blood before putting on, to the ancestral sound of the txalaparta (these boards that one hits in rhythm), their clothes of animals. Decorated with sheep skin, decked with long horns, their faces and bloody arms, they roam the alleys armed with pitchforks, trying to frighten the population with their thunderous and indecent cries. They dance and plot around a huge fire. Then, at the sound of a horn, they return to walk in the city accompanied by the male goat (Aker beltz) and witches (Sorginak) and other mythological characters. On Carnival Day, in this atmosphere that seems unreal, the population is returning to its most ancestral traditions but also to the true meaning of Carnival. This ritual, which appears from another age, is also the occasion of a great feast, the debauch of this night of delirium opens the period of asceticism of Lent, the night gives way to the day, the evil to good.

@@estela364 Yes it is, it´s paganism as its best. Not my fault. It´s plain to see, kids cover themselves in blood (originally the blood of a sacrificed goat) and you have loads of people dressed like demons running around town scaring people, representing wild nature and sex force. And I´m not your bro...
