Out of all the new trucks, demos, rentals, and other equipment, never would I have ever thought we'd be running a Mack Amrep again. Definitely a major improvement from the white demo Peterbilts we got, featured here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmKTlKyXaJmVa6c. Talking with our fleet manager I learned that Mack was chosen over Peterbilt for this unit specifically because of Mack's known establishment in the electric market. Mack was probably the first manufacturer that had an electric chassis. With that reason, it leads me to think it's the same exact reason LA purchased the fully-LNG Macks back in late 2005.
Although the arm is on the slower side, this was definitely the best electric Amrep I've seen so far. This was it's third day running a route, as there was plenty of preparation before sending it out. Unfortunately, I was only to get this amount of footage. Both times that we found the truck, it was finishing the route, going to the dump, and returning to the yard to charge. Not sure how long the battery life is, but it definitely seems like it would be a problem down the line if the city wants to run it the whole day.
The truck needs a tag axle because of the position of the battery behind the cab. This causes the body to be positioned farther away from the cab, and instead of leaving a huge gap between the tailgate and chassis, a tag axle solves that issue. If I'm remembering correctly, the truck can do about 6-7 tons of trash. Let me know if there are any questions in the comments, and let me know what you guys think.

While new technology is all definitely cool there’s a longgg way to go for ev trucks. We have a handful at our dealership and the charge times are unacceptable. Diesel and Lng will always be vastly superior but California law makers have half a brain and will only do things they think work but don’t. If the technology gets there these will be cool but I don’t think we are there yet. Really happy to see this footage!

100 percent. This state isn’t ready for a full force of electric vehicles at all. Unfortunately it would take a major incident to get all those across the board to realize that. Thanks for the comment!

Awesome catch. I had heard from a West Valley driver yesterday that they saw this at the landfill and that it was probably working somewhere in East Valley. Was wondering if anyone got some footage of it, glad you did. Arm is definitely a little slow for LA but like I said in another comment that’s probably just it going through the break in period. A lot of WM Amreps show up like that and then speed up as the weeks go by. Definitely a cool looking vehicle. The tag is different, I remember really liking LAs trucks when I first started filming them because they were easier to get fully in the frame without standing in the middle of someones yard. So that’s definitely different. Glad to hear they haven’t been having any big problems with it. This community tends to hate on any vehicle that isn’t like over 15 years old, especially electric trucks. But the fact is that they are the future and even in the few short years electric trucks have been getting demoed there has been a lot of big steps forward in terms of quality and reliability and that’s good to see

I’ve seen a lot of negative comments and opinions about electric trucks by kids who don’t even know how to fuel up a car lol, so I’m not worried about the negativity. I bet the arm is faster now, just needs to be tweaked up. I do hope the truck is holding up, because it would be nice to see just a couple more of these if we are getting serious about electric. Pretty awesome you got to film this. Aside from the positioning of the battery, the tag axle is also there due to the tare weight being astronomically more than your typical CNG or diesel truck. Without it, the weight per axle wouldn’t even be legal for CA roads lol. It’s insanely inefficient how much the weight of the battery steals from the net tonnage of your load if you want to stay within the DOT weight limits. The Battle Rapid Rail we demoed had an alleged max pay load of something like 8.6 or 8.7 tons, and that was a 26cy body. If this full size Amrep can only do 6-7 tons that definitely should signal Amrep to look into how to make their bodies lighter if they want any chance on being a large contender in the EV side loader market. How did the driver like this truck? Torque seemed pretty decent and the turning radius is likely way better than the Petes. I’d also love to know the range on these and how all the traffic they usually sit in affects it.

Never imagined I’d be filming something like this for LA lol. Thanks for reminding me about the weight limits, I totally forgot about it when making the description. I even remember when I was talking to this fleet manager about the electric Peterbilts he mentioned the need of the tag axle. I never asked about how he liked the truck but he did talk about the range. I don’t know if the truck had a full charge or not when it got started, however he said he’d come back for the rest of the piece route depending whether the battery is over 50%. Maybe all the battery gets wasted waiting at the landfill I guess. Thanks for commenting bro!

I'm glad they bought an American product over anything BYD. Macks look really good in the LABOS teal, and I honestly miss the LE Octos. Interestingly enough it always seems to be West Valley that gets the Macks. Do you happen to know the charge time on this girl? I know there are some EV's with really good charge times, an example of this being the Universal Studio Tour Trams which can charge fully in 15 minutes.

I’m glad they got a Mack as well. This truck is actually out of the East Valley yard. I don’t know the charge time but this truck definitely gets a full charge everyday from the time it’s in the yard to the next morning. Thanks for the comment.

It is cool for something different but this techology still has a long way to go for wanting to have a full fleet. This truck probably wouldn't last in South LA. Rumor has it Republic Services was gonna get some but thry backtracked it cause the trucks cant do a full route without needing charging and the charge time is too long so too much effiecny problems for them. It is cool to see this though.

Any more on order or do I gotta wait a whole year before it comes to NC. None of the regular driver have used those white Pete’s yet and the dudes from support that are trying to get the bugs out claim they can’t do a whole route due to the dump distance and battery not lasting. As far as the cart speed it’s the same on all the yellow arms until the shop adjust them or amrep comes out and switches the cart motor like they did on the white ones

Probably gotta wait a whole year haha. Theres gotta be a whole lot of work to be done before this whole electric thing can become practical. I’ve been wondering why all the yellow arms are slower, but also assumed about the motor like you said. Thanks for the comment man!

That’s literally just it needing to get broken in, it will speed up over time. Most brand new Amreps do this and in fact a good few of WMs brand new amreps never flip a lid until like their 4th week of service
