La Strada is an outstanding catalogue of Italian street photographs from the 1960's. Works from the private collection of Keith de Lellis exhibit the new renaissance of post-WWII Italy. These works show the influence of the established street photography from photojournalists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, W Eugene Smith and Robert Frank. These influences are projected on to an Italian landscape here and represent photography that is quite unique and beautiful.

My parents grew up in that climate and I've seen countless photos like the ones you just shown, with them as the kids. Very cool book choice! You made me think.. I'd love to see you put up an episode on Mario Giacomelli. He's the reason I started taking photographs, it would be interesting to see what you have to say about him :))

Can I reinforce the message of composition, high (and low) vantage point for the images of the era? These often overlooked approaches to photography, while perhaps considered "obvious" today add much drama to an image. One of my uncles worked as a ships photographer in the Adriatic sea taking pictures of tourists in the 1960's and early 70's - you know the job, pictures of the kids in the pool, all that stuff during the era you are highlighting in this video. He was a member of the British Royal Photographic Society and exhibited all over Europe. When he died, a couple of us put together a review of this uncle of mines photographic work form the 1950's, 60's, and 70's (at bjrichus.com/koken/albums/ivor/) and I am struck at just how similar a number of these images are using the same composition techniques you show in this video. Hambridge's "The elements of dynamic symmetry" is from the 1920's, so the dissection of the math and such is written in very formal terms. This can make it a hard to read work, even if its just 130 or so ages. Available online as a PDF for free too! A quick tip; you don't need to squat down for at least some of the lower vantage points if you use a long neck strap and a TLR, looking down into a waist level finder. ;-)

I just looked for the book on Amazon Germany. I only found one for the cheap price of 800+ € ... Too bad... The images you showed here were amazing. Exaclty the kind of photography that I enjoy the most. And I completely agree with your assessment of Lost In Translation. It's a simple movie but it's beautiful and every time I watch it makes me feel good. It's one of my all time favourite movies.

If you take a photo of a rusty staircase these days "established" street photographers will laugh and say that it's not true street photography, but in 60-100 years people will find your picture really interesting.

Some inspirational photography there! I haven't seen the film La Strada, but I have recently seen 8 1/2, by the same Director, Federico Fellini - and the shot's in the movie are truly amazing, a very cinematic and well shot movie. In many ways it looks like the kind of photos taken during this period. Thanks for sharing this.

Great review Ted. Interesting point about the silhouette images being a metaphor for post war Italian society, which may be true of the adult population who lived through it, but not the children depicted in such playful abandonment.

Great book, definitely on my must buy list now. Looking at the photos here and also in other books from this period reminds me to shoot much more in portrait format, nowadays quite uncommon besides portraits itself, think this is one of the downsides of our digitalized world and using screens with their landscape format as our main medium to display photos, or are there any other reasons why most of the photos these days are in landscape mode. Maybe a topic you can pick up for your show Ted? BTW, Lost in translation is one of my all time favorite movies too, love the mood of this film.

Another excellent video. I appreciate your selection of excellent images, your insight into how/why they work, and the context in which they were taken. You mentioned film (movie) in this episode, and I thought it would be interesting to hear what your thoughts are on translating compositional techniques between moving film and stills photography. Though I'm entirely an amateur stills photographer, it's interesting how the experience of becoming one also influences the way one sees film.

+Google made me do it Hi, It depends on what you mean by modern days, for me the best italian 'abstract' photographer, not street or photojournalism, is Franco Fontana. He's still alive but the most important work went back to 1970-80 more or less. I hope it's all clear, good search :)
