Don't start searching for a meaning. It just fits the rhythm well that's all. More than likely this song was passed on orally without writing down lyrics. This line shifted trough time and lost it's meaning. This song has Breton roots.

The song starts by a woman saying she went to the fountain to catch a fish(normally in Québec you dont do fishing in fountains but in rivers and lakes). In that sense, the fish is a man, the fountain could be interpreted as the dating market and her little keychain is rusty because she has been searching for a man for a long time. A Cavalry Baron demands what she would give him if he could pull her out of the bottom of the fountain and she says to pull and see after. When the pulling was done and she is on the ground, she runs back home to write a song. My little pledging heart is not for a baron, but for a man of war who has hair on his chin. (probably gone a long time)
