Amazing video. Straight to the point. Please make more! 🙏🏼 That said, NEVER use anti-seize on a spark plug with shiny threads. It already comes with a special coating from the factory to prevent seizing. Any anti-seize used will act like a LUBRICANT and will cause your torque specs to be off, ultimately over-torquing the spark plug. The only time anti-seize should be used is when the threads on a spark plug have a dull/matted, non-shiny/metallic finish. 😎👍🏼

Did the fuel filter following your video, didn't went that well! First off, I bought the filter from Toyota part-number and it came with holding bracket. So I decided to replace the whole assembly instead to untight the current bracket to replace only the filter. In reinstalling the new filter+bracket I managed to break one of 2 bolts that hold the bracket :'( And in a general way getting the bolts lose and wrenching in that tight space is quite difficult ! So in the end this simple task took me 2h+ and now my filter bracket is only held by 1 bolt -_-

Hi Paul!!! The video is really awesome. I appreciate the zoom-ins and detailed explanation of how old and new things look like. I am not really a mechanic and wanted to ask your advice. I got Toyota Rav4 1996 in Sep 2020 with 97k miles. Recently, the engine sign lightened up and I connected a diagnostic tool to read the code. Turned out, it was P0302. I googled the reasons and turned out that spark plugs could be one of the reasons. One other KZbinr suggested replacing the spark plug wires and seeing if the code will change, but the wires were too short to be placed in different sockets so I just put them back lol. After I turned the car on the engine sign disappeared (???). Few days later, it appeared back again and the car vibrates intensively both on idle and while driving. I haven't taken the car to mechanic since I bought it, so thinking it might be spark plugs. I have few questions: Do I need to replace all the things mentioned in your video, or I can just replace, spark plugs and it's good to go? Are there specific spark plugs I should get? There is a lot in the store and I have a hard time figuring out what's the difference. Any other advise would be appreciated:) I want to try fixing it myself because I love the car, and I live in small city where there is only one mechanic place. I had previously taken the car to them because of an oil leak, but I've paid $$$ and oil leak is still there haha. Will get to that once I figure out this particular problem. Thank you!!!
@LabCoatPaul3 жыл бұрын
P0302 is a code for a misfire. You should replace all 4 spark plugs, the spark plug wires, and the distributor cap and rotor. The cheap wireset and distributor cap and rotor from Autozone should be ok, but the spark plug wires fall apart easily if you pull on them. Use dielectric grease on the connections, and if you're removing the wires off the plugs, don't pull on the wires, and pry the boots up with a flat screwdriver instead. For spark plugs, use regular denso spark plugs. You can get platinum plugs if you want, but don't get any of those weird bosch 4 - electrode plugs. The center electrode on that style of plug is tiny and causes misfires. All the recommended part numbers are in this video.
@kitnfall3 жыл бұрын
@@LabCoatPaul Hi again Paul! I did it!!!! Changed all the parts that you advised by following the video and boom - no more check sign. I'm so excited! Never done any car jobs and it wasn't that hard for me, with your help:) Thank you so much for the video! I have few more questions, if I may. When I was replacing rotor and distribution cap I noticed there is a lot of black goo on the engine, at the bottom of the distribution cap. I have an assumption it might be an oil leak I mentioned earlier? Not sure if that's normal. Another question is, you mentioned in a video that if spark plugs are white or black - there might be a problem with the engine. Well, the old spark plugs were tan on a screw-thread but black on actual "spark" spot (my apologies for such a professional description). I am not sure if I can troubleshoot the engine somehow and fix it? The car drives fine, but I don't really want to wait until it's not haha. Hope you have a great day!!!
@LabCoatPaul3 жыл бұрын
@@kitnfall You have an old RAV4, so there's a 100% chance oil is leaking from every seal in the engine. Oil under the distributor cap is most likely coming from the valve cover gasket or distributor O-ring. If it leaks a lot, fix it. If it leaks a little bit, don't worry about it. Also, I wouldn't worry too much about the old spark plugs having a little bit of black on them. You were probably getting a bit of a misfire. If you want to, check your new plugs after a while to see what they look like.

Hey Paul- thank you for the super-helpful video. I replaced my spark plugs, wireset, rotor cap and distributor cap no problem thank to your video. However last minute i decided to replace the PCV Valve without pulling off the cylinder head cover. I simply popped the old PCV Valve off and popped the new on on. It didnt seem to seat totally flush, but very close. During a test drive the car stalled out as i stepped on the brake coming to a corner. I managed to turn the car off and get it started again. My question is: is it okay to replace the PCV valve as i did? Im wondering if maybe its the rubber grommet or a slight crack in the hose that might be the problem which is causing my 97 rav 4 to stall and also sometimes idle high momentarily at about 2000 rpm? Any advice is greatly appreciated✌
@LabCoatPaul2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have a leaking vacuum hose. A crack in the PCV hose will let extra air into the intake, causing the idle to be too high, or making the engine stall. You need to install a new hose on your PCV valve. It should be 3/8" inside diameter hose, and you can buy it by the foot at your local auto parts store.

any idea how to fix the engine whine? sounds almost like a supercharger, no noise when cold, only starts after driving for a while which gets louder with revving/acceleration, its even worse with the a/c on, im suspecting timing belt but was recently done, mechanic denies and thinks it needs a new a/c unit.
@LabCoatPaul5 жыл бұрын
It's possible you have a bad A/C compressor. Diagnosing it is easy. Just take off the A/C belt and drive it. If the whine is gone, you know the compressor bearings are bad. You can do the same thing to check to see if it's the alternator. Take the alternator belt off, and drive it. It won't charge your battery, but that's not important for a short test drive. You can also take all the belts off, and turn each pulley by hand (with the engine OFF), to see if any of them are hard to turn or grind. It's also possible the belts are just too tight.

I might do some engine rebuilding in the future, but it won't be the stock 3sfe engine. I think rebuilding the engine on my RAV4 is pointless. It's not a good engine. It has very little power and the gas mileage is horrible too. I'll probably get the 3sgte turbo engine (it has 260hp), and swap that into my RAV4. I'll probably rebuild that before installing it. The engine is similar to the 3sfe, just much better.

@@cedarpoplar7443 There are two ways to rebuild an engine. The right way is very expensive. You would take the engine to the machine shop and have the blocked measured, have the head surfaces refinished, get new bearings, cylinders honed, new piston rings, oil pump, water pump, and the list goes on. You'll spend at least $1,000 in parts and even more in labor. The ghetto way is you go to the auto parts store, get some bearings, piston rings, and gaskets, and hone the cylinders yourself with a drill, and do all the work yourself. You'll still spend at least $500, a lot of time, and maybe your engine won't work right. The best option is: don't rebuild the engine! You can probably find a used RAV4 engine, in good condition for somewhere between $500 and $1000. You might even be able to just buy another RAV4 that was crashed but has a good engine for less than $500. Swap the engine into your RAV4, and you're done.

Hi Paul, thank you for the great work that you are doing. I have a similar Rav4, is it possible to remove 4 wheel from this type of car?
@LabCoatPaul6 жыл бұрын
Short answer: NO. I'm not really sure why you would want to remove the 4 wheel drive from a RAV4. It gives you lots more traction and control in rain, snow, and off road. The first generation RAV4 gets horrible gas mileage, considering how light weight it is and how weak the engine is. Mine has never done better than 22 mpg. Removing the 4WD will probably not improve the mileage by more than 1 mpg. If you still want front wheel drive only, you would need to replace the transmission with the front wheel drive transmission, then remove the driveshaft. To complete the project, you would also need to remove the differential, and replace the rear spindles with the non-4WD version.

@LabCoatPaul3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's ok not to add silicone in the corners. It just helps the gasket seal better.

@@LabCoatPaul Thank you for the response! I have a small leak coming from the passenger side that I thought I fixed! I replaced valve cover and added a gasket to the oil pan.This morning as I was warming up the car I found the same leak. I checked the oil pan and it all looks dry! what else can it be coming from on that side? oil pump? I recently picked up the 98 rav4 and I love it! Thanks again!
@LabCoatPaul3 жыл бұрын
@@sonvu5374 Well, the bad news is, every seal leaks. The right side of the car (engine side) has an oil pump, power steering pump, power steering reservoir, oil pan, and transmission axle seal that are probably leaking.

Hello everyone :) Can anyone help with an explanation of flushing the fuel injectors? As I know, there are 2 methods: - with the removal of the injectors - and the second is the running of the cleaning fluid through the fuel line. The second option involves connecting a reservoir with a cleaning fluid under pressure directly after the fuel filter(fuel pump is turned off). How to properly block or loop the fuel return system when using the second method?
@LabCoatPaul3 жыл бұрын
The RAV4 does not have a fuel return line to the tank, so your cleaner will all go in the engine.

Can I use distributor from Rav4 1999 to Rav4 model 1995 ?
@LabCoatPaul Жыл бұрын
In the United States, 1996 - 1997 RAV4 have a distrubutor. 1998-2000 models have an updated engine with 2 coil packs instead of a distributor. It's possible to install the newer ignition system as an upgrade, but you would have to modify the engine wiring harness. I don't recommend it because it's a lot of work and you wouldn't gain any noticeable power or fuel efficiency.

Check with your local auto parts store. They should have most of the maintenance parts like oil, spark plugs, and distributor cap. You can buy original Toyota parts online or through your local Toyota dealer.

Hi Paul, I’m from Colombia and i have a 1996 Toyota Rav4 5 door AWD and is 7 MPG, dont know what to do. Any recommendation?
@LabCoatPaul5 жыл бұрын
@@victorcardona2537 Wow, 7 mpg means there is something seriously wrong with your RAV4. With gas mileage that bad, I would assume the engine misfires and doesn't run very well. Open the hood and start the engine. Check by the engine and under the car for fuel leaks. If it smells like gas, you have a leak. Next, turn off the engine and check your spark plugs, distributor cap, and rotor. Also, check the compression. I did a compression test in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/joTXaYx8arJloNk If you're getting a lot of misfire, backfire through the intake, and hard to start, you'll need to check your timing belt. L35 in Colorado has a timing belt video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipOyo2qdq9aGp8U A plugged catalytic converter can also give you bad gas mileage. I made the mistake of paying upfront to a freelance mechanic we who came to my house (he was a young adult. Seemed to be on drugs or something). I went to take a nap for less than an hour. When I woke up, he had left already leaving me a text message and the key under the driver's mat. I have no fucking idea what he did. The car still sounds good, but I still want do a tune-up to be on the safe side.

Hey Paul...I did the tune up on my 96 Rav4 hoping it would provide better accelleration. I replaced the distributor cap & rotor, plugs, wires, & pcv valve. Made a slight difference but idk...is this just how these 5sfe Toyota engines are -super sluggish in power & accelleration? I have a relative with a 2000 Corolla -same engine -suffers the same sluggish symptoms. I've heard hairline cracks in the coil can cause this symptom but idk...what do you think. Oh, & btw...it has a new timing belt, & recently passed smog with no issues(no codes or check engine light). I usually drive it like a stick(it's auto& 4x4) if I need to catch speed but even little 4 bangers should have a noticeable pep to it after doing a freah tune-up. Do you have any knowledge of this symptom with these engines/ 1st gen Rav4's?
@LabCoatPaul4 жыл бұрын
The first gen RAV4 is a very slow car. If you're getting around 21 miles per gallon, it probably runs right. I've found I drive my RAV4 like a race car, taking it up to redline before I shift, and regular cars just pass me with no effort. People who want their RAV4 to be fast will swap a Japanese 3SGTE engine with the ST215 transmission into it. It's a ton of time and money, but I think that's the only way to make these cars go fast.

I'm somewhat confused... Great video's btw, I have a rav4 (5-door) and ride also a KTM (690smc)... only wished I had a garage, tools and skills to manufacture such a nice bike-stand... but maybe my bike is too heavy anyway. I'm confused because your car has a distributor cap. According to my VIN number check at www.toyodiy.com my RAV4 is from 12-1996, and distributorless models are from 1998 onwards...
@LabCoatPaul6 жыл бұрын
My RAV4 is a 1997 and has the 3S-FE 2.0L engine. The 2.0 liter engine was used until 2003. According to the AutoZone database, the 2.0 liter engine was updated with coil on plug ignition in 2001. That means 1994 - 2000 all have distributor caps. Then in 2004, the engine was replaced with the 2.4 liter, which is also coil - on - plug ignition (no distributor).
@Aug-Ustinus6 жыл бұрын
Well... my old RAV4 has no distribution-cap... maybe it's a europe/usa thing. On rav4world.com they are also puzzled. Btw, I plugged your video there, so far they seem to like it!
