Hi Jerika. I am in BC and researching to start my soap making business. I just wanted to let you know that the address on the label does not necessarily need to be the physical address. It seems many Canadians don't realize that in smaller towns and rural areas, the ONLY way to receive our mail is through a PO Box and a letter using my physical address will be returned to sender. My physical address is not my mailing address and the last sentence in the paragraph I've pasted below (copied from the Health Canada Website) asks for an address that allows postal delivery. "NAME AND ADDRESS - Paragraph 20(a) of the Cosmetic Regulations - The identity and location of the principal place of business of the manufacturer or distributor. Subparagraph 10(b)(i) of the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act - The identity of the person (including a company) by whom or for whom the pre-packaged product was manufactured or produced for resale. In both cases above, the address must be sufficiently complete to allow postal delivery to the principal place of business.

In the US we have the FDA - Food & Drug Administration and the CPSC - Consumer Product Safety Commission for anyone to research the requirements for the products they make. Great information in this video to help those who are thinking of going into business, or if already in business to make sure they are following all the laws and regulations.

Good information! We're in the US, but the concept is the same; you have certain things that need to be on the label to be compliant with the law, but extremely similar to the requirements you have here.

Great video here Jerika...you've been a big help along this journey for my wife and I. Been uploading CNF form recipies for a week or two now and am gearing up to print off labels. I was thinking of putting the submission number that was immediately generated when submitting the form on the side label. But then in your vid here, we actually don't need it on the label (or the actual CN number when we do finally get them). Just don't want to print a a few dozen labels off and realized i needed something else on it. Can't seem to find a direct answer on the Health Canada site on this.

Jerika, great video. I know in the UK/EU have very similar laws. I think they are good practices. In the US, we have to list our ingredients similarly as well as weight and description of product on the front. I've never minded giving my address , I also know in these times people are nervous to do so. Here in US as long as you can be looked up by phone record, email, website that displays your company address, it doesn't need to be on the label. I think we have it easy. Is that good, not necessarily. I think Canada, the UK/EU have done it the right way. Anyone in the US, don't lose your mind if you read this, just a thought! Jill Gross

I can't tell you how many times over the years I've done an art show or market and had some creepy guy hovering and trying to chat me up who then bought a small item or took my biz card and I was soooo grateful my address was not on anything. I would never. Until recently you even had to have your address online registered with WHOIS if you had a website so I always used a male friends address. Now you can pay a couple bucks a year to have it not show. As many women can tell you all it takes is one disturbed person, an abusive ex, or even a bi-polar person during a manic phase to decide they are "meant to be" with you and you are stalked 20 years....I know several who have had it happen and my step mother was one who did it to someone. It only takes one person (and at a large show one interacts with thousands and this does not count all the people following one's biz on various social media sites) to make your life is hell. Not worth it, if the gov wants to take me up on it they can if they ever notice, I don't know any women who put their address out there. I think those who made those rules and bylaws are out of touch and they need to upgrade things based on how biz is usually done now in the internet age as it wasn't safe before, now more so.

Thank you sooooo much. I have been having a hard time finding the correct information for Canada. Especially since I'm not with any social media sites. There are a lot for the USA and since finding your channel it has been much easier. Now I just need to find a recipe for me to use that doesn't make me feel like I'm copying from someone else and that works. Is there a ratio for figuring out hard oils/butters vs liquid oils that is best to use that doesn't make the bar slimey or is it just trial and error? I think my first batch needs to be trashed 😭
@JerikaZimmerman3 жыл бұрын
Trial and error, pretty much. But you can look up articles on what properties specific oils bring to a bar of soap and how much is recommended you use percentage-wise. I believe soap queen has a few articles on this on her blog
@msco.68683 жыл бұрын
I am correct in thinking that each different soap base should have a separate CNF right? I count my "base oils" to be the formulation and the colours/scent/additives to be the variable "may contain" ingredients that vary within that base formulation.

How much do they charge for a recipe assessment in Canada. I live in UK and can get pretty expensive. Some places charge less if you bought the ingredients from them, some charge by base, and variations, some charge more if you want it assessed for EU sales.... In UK the INCI is said so the customers can make an informed decision, when purchasing the soap. But I'm sure that 98% would not understand the technical name of the ingredients 🤦♂️

Yes, for each new essential oil, you need to update your CNF. You can add amendments to your recipes, which is why saving the CNFs you submitted are important.

Yep, the product identity (soap) has to be in the front, main label in both English and in French. And yes, you have to put the saponified names of the ingredients.
