Labour MP Khalid Mahmood drew criticism and was accused of Islamophobia after saying that he believes adverts featuring women wearing headscarves intimidate Muslim women who choose not to wear the scarf.
Mahmood made the comments on Monday during a webinar discussing Prevent, the UK’s controversial counter-terrorism strategy that critics say disproportionately targets Muslims,

Does this man think? Whole point of representation is to show that which is unique to the community it represents, not people who look the same as every other person. Through representation on screen, diverse communities can feel a sense of belonging. A Muslim without hijab will not have those isolating feeling because she is in fact fully integrated, so she will not have those challenges that Muslims with hijab will inevitably encounter/ experience. Plenty of instances of Muslim women being sworn at, hijab pulled, harassed. No one is pulling anything off a muslim woman who dresses like an English woman. The representation on screen will get the society as a whole to be normalised with the look of a visible Muslim woman. Thats the whole point!
