Shadow Equalities Minister Annaliese Dodds recently ignited criticism after saying the definition of a woman depended on "context". Author JK Rowling responded to Dodds on social media, saying she should gain a "backbone".
In the aftermath of International Women's Day, political commentator Dominique Samuels discusses why the definition has become so controversial.
Dominique: "The fact that women on International Women's Day cannot state what a biological woman is, it demonstrates the insanity we are at as a society."

The even crazier thing is that there is no such thing as 'gender' at all. The term was a derivative of 'genus', invented in 1955 by John Money to distinguish characteristics of biological sex and to not confuse sex (intercourse) with biological sex. Now, even intelligent medical organisations refer to gender and biological sex as if they are different. Mad world.

I would tweak your definition. Some women cannot give birth due to being infertile or for some developmental sex disorder. The key to focus on is sex. The name of the category of organism that has the physiological structures to develop and support large, immotile gametes (eggs), is Female. This applies across both animal and plant kingdoms. There are some human individuals that have developmental sex disorders but from those produce both the female or male structures in some form or other and also experience puberty.

The commenter correctly stated the biological definition - that a woman is an adult human female. I was commenting on the corollary "capable of giving birth and being a mother". The definition given by the commenter is partially correct, but focuses on the external situation rather than the internal biological one, as a consequence of being female, upon which the biological definition of female, and hence woman, is grounded. That is, structure and function.

But what does it mean to be a female? It's not an identity; the word is simply a label that denotes members of a biological category, each of which possesses certain reproductive abilities. The biological definitions for the sexes - applicable to literally millions of sexually reproducing species - stipulate that to have a sex is to have functional gonads of either of two types, those without them being thereby sexless. Helen Joyce in a essay at Quillette - She Who Must Not Be Named - underlined and endosed that definition in saying: "The problem is that 'female' is not something you can identify as. It's a word with an objective definition that holds right across all of biology, and hardly any of the things it refers to are capable of identifying as anything. It means: 'of or denoting the sex class that produces large gametes' ..."

Now tell us what it means to be female. You might check the dictionaries, most of which stipulate that to be a female is to have functional ovaries. If a member of a sexually reproducing species - of which there are literally millions - does not have those then they are not a female. The word "female" is a label that denotes those that possess those functional ovaries; it's not an identity, much less an immutable one based on some "mythic essence".

If I went to hospital and the doctor asked me if I was pregnant, I'd be offended as I'm clearly male. Why is a tiny minority's feeling more important than mine? It would also make me very nervous of the person's ability to be a doctor if they can't make the most basic diagnosis.

While it’s verbally ridiculous to ask a man if he is pregnant, it doesn’t put your safety at risk or anyone else’s. Imagine questioning the administrator at your hospital when a male nurse (a very obvious man but in a dress) uses the ladies loos at your blood donor session and being told you’re just transphobic and if you don’t like it you can just stop giving blood.

Great point about lots of females in the family. I was brought up around lots of women. Didn't make me want to put a dress on. Infact I think it made me more masculine because all my nans, aunts cousins etc promoted the good things about me being male. I think if they are allowed to make that decision at 16 then they will need to accept that the NHS will not support them in any mental health issues they have as a result in the future. I don't consider I have a gender. Commonly, what people I have asked consider gender seems to be how you present as either a man or a woman - those being what we observe as adult versions of male or female individuals, respectively. Human beings are extremely proficient at identifying individual male and female faces and therefore I would expect are able to distinguish how they present as individual men and women - distinguished by variations in behaviour, voice, personality, speech and attitudes etc.
