The ending bedroom party scene mirrors the final scene from the Neverending Story. Both movies are about finding the balance between being grounded in reality and keeping imagination alive.

the final scene made me happy as Sarah could visit her friends whenever she liked as they will always be with her as it’s okay to like childish things as you grow up Feel bad for Jareth in his owl form just looking at Sarah having fun with her friends probably sulking but accepting Sarah making her decisions without distractions or persuasions and she may find her way back to him eventually if she chooses to

I think the number one thing I miss In films today is the use of practical effects. Puppets, animatronics, physical models, matte paintings, those sorts of things. A film like this would be made with CG models today. Regardless of how much better CG gets it never feels as real as practical effects, at least for me. I am rambling. When you were talking about the character of Sarah and how much she behaves like a princess I couldn’t help but think to myself that even the name Sarah means princess.

I think CG has gotten loads better (early on, the lack of differentiation between textures was off-putting) to where it is an aesthetic choice which to use. There is a certain "heft" that CG fails to replicate, but maybe my biggest complaint is that CG tries to mimic practical effects instead of doing its own thing.

I agree completely about practical effects. I don't mind CGI but I can almost always see it's fake. I rather practical because my eyes understand it lives in a real space.😊 Also, great info about the name Sarah!

Yeah and cgi doesn’t age well compared to puppets. The cgi owl at the beginning looked cheesy by today’s standards but even years later the puppets have such a life like quality to them

You should go to the Labyrinth of Jareth ball in LA. It's amazing. They have it at the Biltmore hotel every year and it's so beautiful and so magical. People wear incredible costumes and take over the hotel for the weekend. There are even mermaids in the pool. I know that has nothing to do with the movie, but it is magical. It's so much fun. People trade trinkets and are glorious about having their pictures taken. I highly recommend it. I enjoyed your movie review. Thank you, dear.

Noticed that Jareth is not totally gone but outside the window of Sarah‘s room at the end of the movie. This is because Sarah has not let go of her completely of childhood. she is open to more of what being a woman is (the ballroom dance) by the end of the movie. Jareth had a role to play on that awakening and so the time will come when the window will open.

also a fun fact about owls, specifically barn owls as that’s what Jareth is, barn owls only love once and Sarah is Jareths one and only love the sequel manga return to labyrinth kinda supports this as the main antagonist, Mizumi queen of a neighbouring kingdom to the goblin kingdom is the antagonist because Jareth turned her down

People disliked the ending ? Really ? I though it was the best part of the moovie, I find it very powerful to accept to change and mature but that it doesn't mean you have to throw away everything you were, like there was nothing good to keep from your youth immature self.
@GlitchyHalo

A fact about owls, specifically barn owls as that is what Jareth is, barn owls only fall in love once and Sarah is Jareths one and only love Sarah may find her way back to him eventually if she chooses as Jareth watches her from the window at the end but what’s good is that it’s her decision to make with no distractions or persuasions to stop her Sarah is just a wish away from home✨ Also it’s fun to point out when the fairy bites Sarah and Hoggle says “Well what do you expect fairies to do?” Sarah says she thought they granted wishes. Jareth is technically a fae and he granted Sarah’s wish so technically some fairies do grant wishes Also I hope you read the manga sequel Return to Labyrinth as it follows Toby as a highschool student where Jareth keeps a close eye on him and secretly grants wishes here and there to help him through life and eventually make his way back to the underground to fulfill his destiny as Jareths heir. There are new characters added but it’s a good read plus a fun twist on the subplot of Jareth’s continuing romantic interest in Sarah as she supposedly threw her dreams of acting and theater away and became a school teacher There’s also a prequel comic series Labyrinth coronation as it tells Jareths story and how he became the goblin king and it’s told as a story Jareth tells to baby Toby as they wait for Sarah

I saw this at the movie theatre when it first came out (the trailer shown on tv at the time looked so creepy/mysterious that I decided to go and see it) and fell in love with it (or was it Jareth?) immediately. I went every weekend several times to see it and on the final weekend of showings there was only myself and on other person in the theatre watching it and the theatre gave us our half time snacks free of charge....So wonderful on the big screen!I wasn't at all interested in the puppets though, just the human characters. I also got to meet David Bowie in person the following year and practically swooned at his feet! He was lovely and a perfect gentleman.

I guess I am partly to blame for Labyrinth's initial failure, because I never saw it either-- despite my love of both the Muppets and Bowie-- strange how this confluence of talents could put out something with an unappealing vibe. But as always, your (not so) mini documentary provided a wealth of information, not only about the technical creation of the movie, but also of its philosophical substance. I think that I would like this movie, because I am basically Sarah-- I never threw away my childish loves (admittedly my mother threw away some of them, but I've spent some money over the years buying most of them back :D ), though of necessity I did move on into the minefield of adulthood. Though now I'm looking forward to retirement so I can go totally off the rails and be a kid again. But I digress. Thank you again, RNG, for another infectiously delightful journey into the world of F&SF. And I will get caught up, I swear! :)

Hey, RNG, just quickly checked your back file on The Thirteenth Floor, and now here I be. Truth be told, this movie did not do so much for me -- but I am a BIG Dark Crystal fan, so I'm looking forward to that. I admit that I did appreciate the characters Ludo and Sir Didymus. Also, I always give unconditional support to pretty much anything featuring Jennifer Connelly, I'm a softie that way. The business of wishing your little brother bye-bye reminds me of a subplot in Zathura, a movie based on a story from the same man who gave us Jumanji -- Zathura is not great but I like it. Not a movie, but you may want to take some peeks at a show called Farscape. It featured aliens brought to life by Henson and they were not "mere" Muppets, they worked very well as actual characters. Extreme trivia: a friend I know via Facebook named her son Jareth and has recently been teaching him how to drive. That whole age issue never occurred to me -- I mean, women across the entire age spectrum have wanted David Bowie, and when you're David Bowie, honestly, do the rules still matter? June Lockhart, who I know best as the mother from Lost in Space, had a huge crush on Bowie. I'm embarrassed that I somehow forgot the M. C. Escher tribute -- I love that guy, I once had a calendar dedicated to his work. So nice to hear the bio on Toby Froud, that is so cool. All right, RNG, this ran long but it was packed solid and worth it, I haven't a clue how I would edit it. Looking forward. Excelsior!
