"Confiné dans sa maison et dans sa tête, ne croisant personne, Robert Combas peint passionnément, à la rencontre des autres dans ces portraits à l’encre vive. Comme s’il représentait tous ces gens qu’il avait seulement croisés en sortant de chez lui et que, pour la plupart, il ne reverrait sans doute jamais, la terre étant trop grande sous ses pieds, et les hommes trop petits dans l’infini pour qu’ils puissent tous rester à la portée de ses yeux."
