The texture fixative seems cool but I'm not sure if I could be less interested in the powder blender stuff. I'm curious, does the fixative let you layer even over burnished portions of a piece? And does it let you blend using thinner over it?

Ok. I skimmed through the comments, and seems no-one suggested the blending tools for pentel pens. The recommended makeup sponges esp. the white dollar store kind are a little soft to work with, but the sponge tool set for pentel pans are made to smooth out chalky powders. They come as little sleeves for pointy spatulas and in different shapes in the kind of the make up sponge variety but a little stiffer. They should give you the control for larger areas and the precision to approach the edges of your foreground.

I'm kind of confused, how does a powder soak into paper? And what is sanded paper? You can also get sponge applicators made for make up with longer handles, might be a cheap alternative. Or you can get sponge applicators that go with pan pastels and I believe those have replaceable sponges and some even have a handle kind of like and offset spatula so it might be more comfortable to hold.
@Lachri8 жыл бұрын
+brikhouse22 I can't explain how it soaks in...but it does. It absolutely does not work on regular cotton paper. The makeup sponges may work. I've not tried them yet :) I do have the ones for pan pastels that I totally forgot about while I was working on this project. I will use them next time for sure! :D

Lisa, thank you for all of your medium critiques. I am wondering since you have to prime the work surface first, and in the end you don't necessarily need to cover the art with glass, can you use fine art wooden boards and panels, such as Ampersand? Thanks!
@Lachri8 жыл бұрын
+Wildlife Painter I think you could if they still had enough tooth. The wood ones that you can gesso yourself are the ones I'm thinking would be best. I've not tried it yet so I don't know for sure. Something for me to test :D I tried a gessoboard and it was WAY too smooth.

Can you use the fixative in just an ordinary coloring book, without the blender and stuff?
@carolemcalpine68087 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa, I am not sure I understand the need for the powder blender, especially on sanded paper. I purchased some but did not receive a blending tool with it, I guess I needed to purchase the kit from Brush and Pencil. I am working on quite a large piece and following your instruction I laid down the first layer of background pencil and then using a wide flat brush, added the powder blender. To my horror most of the pencil I put down came off, it was as dusty as pastels. I added more color then just used my finger to rub the color into the paper and smooth it out. This also made a mess but it was far less than with the powder blender. I watch your videos, particularly the portrait of the girl with flowers and you seem to get great coverage on your background with very little mess. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?
@lynnephelps8 жыл бұрын
I hate pastel texture on my hands too, ditto charcoal! I love my Pan Pastels. I think you would be extremely interested in their line of Sofft tools they've developed to applying Pan Pastels. I think they would work perfectly for the Blender Powder! The handles are Iike a bent palette knife and there are a variety of tip shapes with disposable sponge covers that slip over the tips. They also have larger sponge pads you hold in your hand. They are close to makeup sponges in consistency but the shape and the tools are amazing. You can see demos of the Sofft tools here on KZbin.

In 2014 a fantastic book came out called The New Colored Pencil by Kristy Ann Kutch. She describes and recommends (among a great deal of other grounds/surfaces for colored pencil) a long list of sanded papers for colored pencil use. And yes, the coverage as far as being able to layer and layer and layer is fantastic! It's about continually trying different new and different products and working outside your comfort zone or as some say out of the box. What's a bit ironic is that you seem to pride yourself of trying new things...but these sanded papers have been out for decades used by pastel artists...and their use with colored pencil has been known by professional colored pencil artists for years. Welcome to the party! : )

Lisa - A very good & informative video. Takes some of the guesswork out of using the powdered blender, [which I've already bought, along with the textured fixatives, etc]. This looks awesome! Could you use colored pencil normally then spray the texture fixative or use the touch up texture by itself over it then use white colored pencil on top or would you have to go through all the steps you showed us? Also, have you tried blending with those triangular makeup sponges, or beauty blenders? The little sponge they gave you looks like an eye shadow brush. Those beauty blenders look like bigger versions of eye shadow brushes.

I forgot to ask, would this kit make drawing straight on to smoothed gessoed board/canvas feasible? I am getting quite excited now! :D
@Lachri8 жыл бұрын
+Hyogail It depends on how smooth. I tried super smooth gesso board and that was a massive nope. I think if I gesso a board myself though that it might work. I've not tried it on canvas board yet. Because this is not flexible I am guessing working on regular stretched canvas that moves would not be ideal. A canvas board might work though. I plan to gesso a watercolor canvas board to try out :)

+Lachri Fine Art brilliant, it certainly seems like it will need a lot of trial and error to see which surfaces suit the technique best. Lisa, is suede mat board considered a nonporous surface? Also, I'm a little confused regarding when you actually applied the textured spray. Did you spray before starting on the bird or not until later - or was the bird done with a layer of the powdered blending powder like the background? Did you spray the entire piece with the textured spray or just small areas you wanted to re-work? I bought this kit a few weeks ago, but haven't had a chance to try it yet. Looks like lots of fun
@Lachri8 жыл бұрын
+Kathy McDaniel I don't think the suede mat board would work. I only sprayed the texture spray once on this, after I had pretty much finished everything but wanted to add additional layers at the end. I sprayed the entire piece when I did. If I needed texture on a small area, the small bottle of touch up fixative would have worked :D
@kathymcdaniel18408 жыл бұрын
+Lachri Fine Art I started a new drawing yesterday on suede mat board and used the powder blender on the background. It 'seemed' to work, but I wasn't really sure if it was a characteristic of the mat board (the blending) or the powder. Also couldn't really tell from your video or Alyona's whether I was using enough powder.

Hello, Lisa I just purchased this Blending Powder. You mentioned that all texture sprays are acrylic base or someone did in the now 40+ videos I have watched since I ordered the supplies. My question is can the SpectraFix Fixative work for this it is claimed to be all natural formula or is that brand even worth purchasing to try if you have any experience with it, or is another Fixative available by now I can use? I waited so long before I received the materials thanks to shipping blunders I am now once bitten twice shy about ordering from Brush and Pencil through Blicks, and Amazon, they both lost my orders and could not track the locations 1 for 4 days the other for 5 days BUT they received payment ever so promptly and so politely asked me to give them the time required to locate my orders before issuing my refunds. Do I absolutely need to Gesso my paper or can I use Canson watercolor paper, The lot I purchased well it has this surface that droplets of water bead up for a short time before soaking in? I was just so eager to try and use this product after I watched your hands perform such lovely miracles on this project, but do not recall you stating in projects since after if other papers or materials can be used or omitted altogether. I was unaware at the time of purchase that I ABSOLUTELY MUST use the texture spray from Brush and Pencil and Gesso, sadly I am one of those people who dive in head first off a cliff into a lake, hit the bolder that all before missed, just below the surface, than ask questions why was I not told about this before I jumped...lol. You truly are so very gifted I try to watch all your live broadcasts and repeatedly go to the patron site of yours. I find what you claim in videos to be as close to 100% correct as anyone can be I trust you implicitly.

I'm very confused. I watched your video and you state that you painted your paper with thinned gesso, which I get, but then you later state you used the texture fixative. So when was the texture fixative added on and when was the texture fixative added for the 70 layers? Was it between layers?
