Mike finishes up lacing the 32 spoke rear wheel by lacing the non-drive side. Note the parallel spokes that connect on each side of the valve hole. By now you might need to use a spoke wrench, screwdriver or nipple driver to help get the nipples on the spokes.

Beginning at 2:14 is what save me from going crazy. I spent 3 days messing up the non-drive side and could not figure out why. Thanks for the video.

I have confidence this chap is an excellent wheel builder, but his explanation paired with the shakey and vague camera work makes something that's already a little tricky way more complicated than it needs to be. Definitely one of the harder to follow wheel build videoss I've used.

I know this is an older post on this lacing, but I have referred back to this video and the drive side lacing video many times when I have needed to lace a new rim and hub. Simple straight forward instructions. Greta video, Mike.

Don't be stupid like me and listen to the comments. Non-drive side 1st spoke entry point is ~160 degrees not 180 degrees. If you do make it wrong then half the spokes will be in too deep the rim (max to the nipple). And you can only notice it once you start tightening all the nipples more.I had to re-lace the non-drive side to get it correct. Awesome tutorial. Thank you so much for posting this. So easy to follow along.

Thanks Mike, great video and explaining as you go along. like everyone else the only one problem was on the start of the non drive side but it was quite obvious . I had tried someone else's pdf and video instruction on a front wheel and it took me several hours to get it right. A good instructor always makes the job easier. Thanks.

Great video. However, on my hub it wasn't straight-forward at all which hole to put the spokes through to come out through the "larger gap". Also the first non-drive side spoke that goes next to the valve hole was NOT opposite the other spoke but at about 160'. So it took a while for the prophecy to self-fulfill on my wheel!

Nice how to video. Help me understand what load is being transferred by having the spokes rub together? Both spokes move laterally as a static pair. There are no opposing forces at the intersection pulling the two spokes into equilibrium. Isn’t this just a matter of connivance in that there is lot less spoke bending and finessing required for assembly. Clue me in if I’m all wet. Thanks.

When lacing the first set of spokes on this side, he incorrectly states they need to drop into the larger gap (55s). They don't! They need to be persuaded past the small triangle which he says is incorrect but shows (1:10s), or else some spokes will be too short/long and the hub will end up twisted. It took me several re-lacings and looking at another wheel to figure this out.

Maybe your hubs are different than most. I've laced several sets of wheels just like he says (dropped into the larger gap) and it works great.

Move each of the 8 spokes over 1 hole and they'll all fit perfectly. Just eyeball it out before u put in the 1st spoke and u'll see where it goes...its never directly across as he states in the video.

As others have pointed out - goes wrong when lacing the innys. Should NOT select the hole on the otherside of the hub opposite the valve hole, Rather use the spokes on the other side of the hub as a guide ... the hub holes are offset on either side and run the spoke to follow one on the other side to the rim hole adjacent. You have to do this because the spokes are the same length (appart from a couple of mm difference bw drive / non-drive)

How is this correct? One of the spokes next to the valve is an outie, but the other is an innie. That's not symmetric.

@rikmiddleton974

If you do just one "outie" on the drive side and then put your "innies" from the non-drive through you will be able to put gaffer tape around them to keep them out of the way. They are harder to put in with 16 spokes nippled on the drive side. And what about the principle of "outie" spokes being in the "tension direction? And what about the half hole offset between one side and the other? This guy may know how to do it but he oversimplifies.

second part didn't work for me (hope Pro2 evo, carbon rim). it was off by 1 hole (some short, some way too long). turn out my innings do have to be closer to the large triangle (have to push with thumb to fit) rather than open space he states. Had to relace 3 times until I said forget it and picked and existing wheel to copy and noticed that it was off by 1 (3x cross).

Useing words like shrapnel incorrectly only make you sound foolish ! Shrapnel is made through an explosion. What you are referring too is mettle filings or simply drill chips . You will never hear them but they can work ther way in to causeing tube leaks , that aside thank you for your video I used it step by step to lace my wheel it worked as it showed thanx .

Not a good video if you are trying to lace your wheels. Poor vocabulary choices with unclear directions and unreliable statements. This will ruin the surface finish of your spokes if they are not raw. If you have a 6 bolt flange for disks, it only gets worse. This video is not a good source to lace your wheel.
