Lacing Out and Potting up a Crassula

I’ve been wanting to pot up this 15 gallon Crassula Argentea Sunset for the last year or so.
I get it started and explain my process as best I can!
I’m no expert in bonsai, that’s for SURE, but I’d like to expose and celebrate the trunk and branching of this maturing plant while enjoying its rich yellow colored leaves and pretty winter blooms.
We’ll revisit it from time to time, I’ll keep snipping, and maybe someday, I’ll get it just right.
Meanwhile, I hope that you’ll be inspired to play with your plants, too.

You have created a forest style bonsai! I admit that I held my breath when you cut off the large “trunk” but it looks great. Nice to know we can have such fun with succulents. Looking forward to its progress.

You have given me some ideas about my succulents. I'm always a bit scared that I'll damage my plants beyond repair. But now I'm going to go for it and make some cuts and see what happens.

I thought about turning my jade plant into Bonsai. Just a few questions for you: 1) Beside trimming, do you know if the plant responds well to wire branch training? 2) Would you ever bring a Bonsai expert on to help you with your Jade plant? I think that’d be cool for a video collaboration. 3) Would you ever take a bonsai class/workshop to help with your designs?

Hi Laura, I just found your channel and I already love it. I was always interested in collect succulents but I live in Texas and the temperature in the summer is super high and during the winter super cold. I lost several succulents due to the cold weather, even when I winterize them. Where do you live and do you have any tips and tricks for the winter months for outdoor cacti and succulents. All the best

Hey Laura i have a question. I have a foxtail agave pup (very small) i plucked off the side of the main plant trunk. Its only 3inches in diameter from leaf tip to opposite leaf tip. It started to flower and has a small flower coming from the center that looks exactly like the mother plants huge flower. Is that normal??

You could make this into a kinda forest, clump style, baobab-esque bonsai composition. The goal is the create taper. Sections that are long, straight, with no taper, cut them back and force branching. Tip: with succulents like this, also portulatlcaria, cut slightly beyond the node you want branching. Leaving a little bit will allow it to dry out the tip. It you cut it at the actually node, you risk it dying back to the next node. Once your main branches developed, you can start to just prune the tips for ramifications or small twigging branching and leaves. Also. Nigel Saunders here on YT has so many great bonsai videos. I've watched him for many years. Try to create taper. Try to eliminate crossing branches that cut back into the composition. Eliminate inward facing branches. Also Eliminate bar branching and where a branch divides onto more than 2. Ideally, it should be 1 branch, into 2 into 4, 8 etc. Having 1 go into many branches can make that section swell and the taper will reverse and thicken. ♡ you Laura

The advice at the 3 minute mark is baffling. For the love of all things holy, do not ever put plastic bags or jugs at the bottom of a pot. It will completely mess up the drainage flow and likely lead to root rot. Perhaps the environment is hot enough in your region that water retention isn't a problem but giving that advice to your audience seems like a really bad idea.

I think you have to know the history of the plant. It’s been on her front step for years and she’s been taking cuttings from it and just basically neglecting it. In another time she would have just got rid of the plant altogether but she’s showing one way to give something you might not value a second chance. The plant will be ok, and we will watch it on the next 20 walkabout wednesdays just like we have seen it the previous 20. I like it.
