No housing and no shelter will enable addiction the way camps do. That's why not even a year's rent paid in advance will persuade some of these addicts to leave the camps.

People assaulting other people in shelters need to go to jail, but your argument that fear of being assaulted is the main reason homeless people avoid shelters is not the only reason they will not go to a shelter. News reporters have interviewed many homeless people who are addicts and refuse to abide by rules in shelters that includes no substance use. They also refuse or fail rehab over and over, because there is no adverse consequence.

@NMV-ej4zd I hear what you're saying, I've seen those interviews. Having watched other similar interviews Is how I know so many homeless people won't go to shelters because of the violence. I've even spoken to homeless people about it on really cold winter days (I work with the public), and the ones I've spoken to told me the shelters aren't safe. They are so afraid because of the experiences they had at shelters that they would rather freeze on the streets. Not every homeless person is a drug addict. Let's keep straw man arguments out of this.

@@teagoldleaf4137 The people telling you “shelters aren’t safe” are lying. Shelters have staff who are happy to call the cops if someone acts up. Most people don’t act up because they know if they get the boot they’ll also be banned in the future. Homeless people will tell you anything to keep that addiction door open. Some shelters even require breathalyzer’s and urinalysis tests, something that users can’t do because they’re drunk and high. Shelters are a thousand times safer than living in a tent city.

The shootings and stabbings are not happening in shelters but are common with those hiding from the shelter. Those that prefer to get high and share the tent with various people seldom admit that as their reason. The rules about curfew, how many shopping carts of random debris, bringing pets, sharing beds, job search, mental health appointments.....it is far more than just the drug use.

So it's against the law to be poor??? The wages are all under $25 an hour,! I can't afford the rent on $21 an hour I will park in my van, because I am a human being and need shelter. This rent increase came without warning from the Washington county housing authority. I have to pick between rent or my car. The shelters are full of drug addicts, so if you got a job or things your ran out.
