Also, it's the year 1927 for them, which was the prohibition period in America banning the purchase of alcohol, and a good two years before the great depression era. By the way Jazz, there was nothing "legal" about Lackidaisy, even in its early days, as it's a "speakeasy" establishment. The only thing that would be legal about it is the cafe front above ground.

I'm blown away from just how incredible this turned out. The concept is really interesting, and the animation, character designs, sound effects, and voice acting are all incredible. Freckles is definitely my favorite character. His voice actor did a great job making him sound cool and cute, or completely unhinged when he needed to be. Fable Siegel and the rest of the team did an amazing job bringing this world from webcomic to webvideo. I hope it's just the first of what's to come.

It all takes place in St. Louis, Missouri. The mighty Mississippi River flows right through town all the way down to New Orleans. Nicodeme and Serafine Savoie are Cajuns, but they very much enjoy enjoy... _"fun",_ if you couldn't tell, and bootlegging provides plenty of it, so they moved upriver to be right in the middle of it all, where the action is.

Mordecai (the black cat with the pistol) used to work for the woman in the bar’s husband, a successful bootlegger. Once her husband got killed business went south and Mordecai dipped, but not before shooting out one of Viktor’s (the big scary bartender) kneecaps. Victor used to be the muscle of the group but with his leg injury he’s consigned to bartender duty.

This is rather fitting due to the pilot's hint of being a stealth sequel for the webcomic, as the events take place in mid-September compared to the webcomic's starting point on May 21st. Up to a point in the webcomic, Rocky took a nasty blow to the frontal lobe that left a scar and a small crack in his skull, and slowly after that, he starts showing unstable behavior.

17:50 Speakeasy’s. This particular one is called Lackadaisy, but on the regular day to day business it has the Little Daisy Cafe which doesn’t have anything to do with Alcohol whatsoever. The female cat’s husband is Dead ( good observation Dwayne) hence she was talking to the portrait in the office. The speakeasy was his business and after he passed his wife inherited it from him.

The poem is basically commenting on the Mississippi River, saying that the name “old man River” which I’m guessing is one of its nicknames, is misleading cause he sees the river in a grander, more roguish sort of way. Personally I don’t fully get it since I don’t know Mississippi or it’s river, but he seems to view it as a symbol for the adventurous life he feels able to pursue here. The words suggest he sees the river, and therefore the general area/way of life, as powerful, impish, and seductive.

Rocky was excited to crash into and mess with the quarry because it was owned by Sedgewick Sable, or Wick, the well-standing cat at the bar. Wick and Mitzi, the bar owner, have a very close connection (mostly so she can try to get some of his money to help with the bar) and Rocky is jealous of Wick because of that. I don't know if it's because he has a crush on Mitzi or if he feels that his position as someone she needs at Lackadaisy is threatened by Wick, because Rocky has a deep-rooted fear of being unwanted due to his past. That's also why Wick was so uneasy at the end, because he knows his rock quarry was destroyed and he can't do anything about it because it would get out that he was partaking in illegal alcohol activities.

(I have yet to read the comics, so I could be wrong) From what I saw, it seemed more like Rocky was just being very observant of the situation despite his excitement (which could very well be adrenaline). It felt less like a personal decision, and more a practical consideration of, "There's a quarry nearby! Quarries usually have buildings, tools, machines, and other things we could use to our benefit! How convenient!". Not saying that Rocky didn't know it belonged to Wick (he very clearly did know). Just that I feel like he was acting more on survival instincts.

If I may also add some cents (no pun intended), the pilot movie takes place in mid-September (as seen with Mitzi's newspaper) while the webcomic story started on May 21st, 1927. Possibly showing that the pilot is happening sometime in the future for the webcomic.

Probably been said, but just in case, during prohibition you couldn't sell or make alcohol. People had to get their booze illegally through moonshiners, for rural folk, and speakeasies for more urban centers. Lackadaisy is a speakeasy. (They are called Speakeasies because they were hidden and most times you had to whisper a password to the doorman or have some token of entry) The cute little dude, Horatio, is doorman for Lackadaisy. Most politicians and businessmen at least knew where the good spots were, if they weren't regulars themselves, and it was the rare few who couldn't be bought off. The illegal liquor product also just couldn't be driven around in broad daylight either. Rum/Whiskey Runner and Bootlegger were terms for the crazy ones who picked up and delivered the cargo to its destination or relay it to someone who would. NASCAR and other car racing was birthed in this time as the bootleggers were always modifying their cars to go faster and more maneuverable to outrun the cops. Naturally the booze also had to be smuggled in less obvious ways. One such option was to go through a funeral home. They would run a false story in the papers with coded language, usually a real gruesome death to deter curiosity, and hide the liquor in the coffin. (Police couldn't just willy-nilly dig up a grave, so it was safe for a time) Then the runners would know where it was hidden and pick it up. However, as this show demonstrated, other rivals could read the same story in the paper or get the same clues. Then, and often, there would be a deadly confrontation to claim the prize.

It wasn't just that Prohibition was widely unenforced and blatantly flaunted, it was also that people were getting drunker than ever or getting poisoned from the breakdown of any and all rules, norms, and moors about both producing and drinking alcohol. It was that they needed alcohol taxes to get the Government back up on its feet. It was the rise of centralized criminal enterprise.

18:16 Interestingly about Prohibition and Alcohol, it was the opposite of taxing like Weed. Prior to Prohibition there was no income tax in the USA. If I remember correctly, about 75% of the US government's revenue from 1776-1920 came from taxes on alcohol. But alcoholism had become such an epidemic in the USA, that a Christian religious movement called the Temperance Movement took hold. It blamed alcohol for men abusing their wives, people being lazy, deadly accidents happening at jobs, homelessness, etc. This movement suggested banning alcohol and since there welpuld be no alcohol to tax, they proposed replacing the tax on alcohol with an income tax. Prohibition lasted from 1920-1933. The last year of Prohibition was also about the same year that the Great Depression hit. Now we have both an income tax and taxes on alcohol. Go figure.

First time watching your videos as I just saw it in my suggested videos and I noticed the "Commanders" jersey, so I figured I'd give it a watch. Fellow Washington fan here born and raised in Maryland, but moved years ago. Before I get to the subject of the video, gotta say, I'm glad Danny boy is gonna be gone. Anyway, I just watched the Lackadaisy pilot and it was a pretty good watch. I like to point out that there wasn't much music in many of the scenes and that let the visuals speak for themselves and built the tension well. Interesting stuff will check out the next episode whenever that is out.

So, something I spotted on Wikipedia is that, apparently people thought the 18th Amendment would target only _distilled_ (hard) alcohols like whiskey. But the subsequent Volstead Act defined "intoxicating liquor" as everything above 0.5%ABV, and _that's_ what really set off the Prohibition era.
