I have more Laconicos than any other designers in my collection. I absolutely love his designs. Thanks for highlighting his work! I need a Sea Otter in my life!

Right? I definitely need a Sea Otter! I'll get lucky one of these days.

Great video! I’m a huge Laconico fan myself, having owned almost every production knife he’s designed (except the Slayback, but that’s just an EZC with a funny blade right? 😂) and a few of his customs as well. Something I have found works well to overcome the standard MBK clip for the preferred deep carry is the ZT 0450 clip by MXG. Which also works on the Sea Otter, and the finish is a near perfect match.

Hahah, yeah, either an EZC or an EWC with a funny blade, depending on which version you get. *BUT* it's that funny blade that makes it my absolute favorite from MBK! I find it _sooooo_ useful for all of the utility cutting I do! Fantastic piercing and precision work. I've heard that the 0450 MXG clips would work but haven't tried it myself. Do you have to modify it at all, or do the screws just line up? I'm fine with extending a screw hole a bit with a file if needed.
@jayn82162 жыл бұрын
@@KnifeNerdery no modification required, it lines up perfectly.

Got the Slayback XL. Amazing knife.

That one is way too big for me, but I'm so glad they made it -- that blade shape just *needed* to be massive. Amazing.

Very cool video! Glad I sent them to you to check out! The bearings in the Sirius are stock and I did put that edge on it. I've since bought the XL Slayback and it's fantastic. How many Laconicos are too many? I've not found that out yet! :D
@KnifeNerdery2 жыл бұрын
Nice work on the edge! You use a KME I think you said? He's a prolific designer, so while I'm not sure if there's ever a point of "too many", I suspect you'd run out of room pretty quick. Especially since you're a "Get one of every color!" type collector. 😝 Thanks again so much for sending these to me! It was a blast. The Anso video should be up this week!

Love the video. Thank you, thanks to Stefan for sharing. Hope you’ll consider rolling this format over to other affluent knife designers. I have eight locoico models, half from MBK. Would have 10 in my lineup, but gifted out the Drop Keen, and gave my son the full size Old guard in January for graduating boot camp. One question.. have you previewed an MBK XLC? It’s super sized banger flipper, with clean acoustics. It’s a sweet value @300$ for a full ti integral. Not super fidgety, but very boss in form and function. Thanks again for the sweet Loconico content!

Haha, yeah, this was very fun to film! It helped that I own a few of his knives already, though obviously not as much as some folks out there (like yourself!). But the whole notion of a tasting flight across OEMs and price points was a blast. Who else could I do something like this for? Justin Lundquist has worked with a ton of OEMs. Do you have other suggestions?

Oh, and nope, I never got to check out that XLC, but a friend showed me a bunch of videos of his. He had to sell it to cover some funds, and it was a very sad day -- he adored that thing!

An excellent line up! I've always appreciated how simple his designs are. He really seems to nail it every time. Great video 👍

Yeah, his style and design aesthetic is riiiiight up my alley, and his knives also have a really high level of usability, too. He's definitely one of my favorite designers!

Nice!! The XL is definitely bigger than I normally would go for, but my friends who have one absolutely love it!

I made orange peel texture on a piece or aluminum when I was trying to smooth it up, with a wire wheel,to use as a tool when I used to turf carpet. It was not the texture I wanted but it definitely works.
@KnifeNerdery2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha unintentional orange peel would probably be pretty alarming if you're trying to polish it instead, but luckily it's a really cool look in the end.

Does anybody know who MBK’s Chinese OEM is?
@1jaasuh2 жыл бұрын
Officially no. Some of the early ones were made by Kizer. Then they said I believe that it was a smaller Chinese OEM. Now for one of my favourite theories: I think it’s QSP, at least for some of them. The early models of the OG had two phosphor bronze washers and a Teflon washer on each side. My QSP penguin (the S35VN knives plus version if that matters) had the same. I’ve not seen anyone else do that. But of course I could be totally wrong!
@KnifeNerdery2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, what Stefan said. And I wouldn't be surprised at all if it were QSP. I've only had a two QSP knives in at this point, both OEM work, but between those and the videos I've seen, it seems pretty similar execution. As much as I love Sanford and Ray, it does bug the heck out of me that they don't say who their OEM is. It's great that they at least say the country of origin, but why the secrecy? It's pretty darn common practice at this point to list your OEM unless *they* make you sign an NDA. So maybe it's not their fault? 🤷🏼♂️
@evanb1232 жыл бұрын
@@KnifeNerdery I’ve always wondered about the secrecy as well. I just thought I’d ask to make sure I wasn’t in the dark about it. Maybe you’re into something with an NDA 🤷🏼♂️
