I think along the way I have tried focusing on one specific technique at a time... like practicing just focusing on tone production and practicing just for bow handling. Also, practicing music (or scales... scales are even better :D) with one note to a bow really, really slow (like two metronome clicks with the setting on 40bpm) really helps with both.

Unless you're not used to reading in Concert C, the music for violin should be the same as music for flute. o_o... The only thing is you might have to shift some notes around, octave-wise, to accommodate the range a flute can play.
