Been there, done that in September 2020. Memorable experience of being the only biker on the route while doing it. A few points though: Firstly, the place from where the road on the Leh-Kargil highway cuts towards Padum/Zanskar is not actually Lamayuru, but a point just a little bit before Lamayuru, towards the Khaltse side, and right before the climb for Lamayuru begins. There is a small Buddhist gompa by a small stream tucked away in a deep gorge at the location, and a couple of boards pointing out the direction to the way stand at the entrance to the road on the highway. So, you won't miss it. Secondly, rather than going from Padum to Wanla/Leh, its advisable that you go the other way around from Leh to Padum via Wanla because there is a very steep section encountered just after crossing the Lingshed village/Murugan pass, and the road is not only very steep, but even very narrow, dusty and bumpy. This makes the road not only very dangerous but some vehicles may even find the steep climb up to be quite difficult. After crossing the steep section, the road meets the new NPD road being built and that runs along the Zanskar river all the way uptill Padum. Thirdly, as pointed out quite correctly in the video, the route from Wanla to Padum is mostly all offroad and dusty, atleast till the Zangla village. However, even that is nothing compared to the road from Padum to Kargil, which has unnecessarily been made so rocky and bumpy that a vehicle cannot move at a good speed over it without damaging something. However, the arduous journey on this road will be rewarding with the views in this section from Padum to Kargil via Rangdum, Pensi la and Panikhar that are extraordinarily beautiful with giant peaks and gorgeous glaciers seen all along the way. With all of the above kept in mind, a better route suggested, that will not miss out on much is as follows: Go from Manali-Leh and finish visiting all of the permit required places around it like Nubra, Pangong, first. Then, from Leh go to Khaltse-Wanla-Sir Sir la-Photoksar-Singela-Lingshed-Murugan pass-Zanskar river - Zangla-Padum-Pensila-Rangdum-Panikhar-Kargil. From Kargil, you've the option to either go towards Drass and Srinagar or if you want to cover Lamayuru as well, then go towards it and then from there come back either via Leh or Dah-Hunu and Batalik. Similarly, if you want to explore around Padum, you can go uptill Kurgiakh village but not beyond. This way you will avoid the deadly water crossing in the Kurgiakh chu River encountered between Kurgiakh & the Shinkula pass. One word of caution about the homestays in the region is that they are few and far inbetween, especially in the long section between Wanla and Padum, you might find a place to stay in only at Lingshed or Zangla. On the other side one may find a place to stay at only at Abran or Rangdum or Panikhar inbetween Padum and Kargil. And most of these places may even be apprehensive to offer a places to stay in as long as the pandemic is going on. So, plan your travel accordingly, and carrying your own tent and some food atleast is advisable, like I did on my tour of the region in September 2020.

Rohan bora I want to cycle from manali- padum-lingshed- Leh pls suggest What route will be better?and which month
@rohank92923 жыл бұрын
@@drnileshkshatriya1429 you've already given the route that you want to take. But a few pointers on that route: A. there are some very big water crossings just after you cross Shinku La on the Kurgiakh side and you may need to take the help of some big vehicle or truck to cross it overthere. B. The climb up Shinkula from the Darcha side is less steep as compared to the climb up from the Padum side. So go from the Manali to Padum via Shinkula. C. Just before you reach Lingshed, the road is again very steep up a hill. D. From Padum, the road diverges into two parts - Padum to Kargil via Rangdum and Pensila. And Padum to Khaltse via Zangla, Lingshed and Wanla. You may have to select one of the two routes unless you're doing a round circuit. Padum to Kargil via Pensila is more scenic with big mountains, glaciers and it is a little bit easier too as you need to climb up only one pass of Pensila at 4400 meter. However, the new route from Padum to Khaltse via Lingshed and Wanla, though quite scenic in itself is more treacherous as you need to climb up three passes of Muruganla, Sirsirla and Singela. While the Padum to Kargil road is mostly covered in small stones which will make the route very bumpy, the other route from Padum to Khaltse via Lingshed is mostly muddy and dusty. E. The second route via Lingshed also has fewer villages settlements between passes and therefore, if you're stuck inbetween a long section, you might not find any villages overthere for a long time too. The other route via Pensila has a good number of villages and towns all along the way, especially when you approach Kargil, and the road overthere in the final 30-40 kilometers becomes completely paved also. My advise to you would be to go from Padum to Kargil via Pensila and Rangdum if you haven't done so already. The views are simply jaw dropping. F. Regarding the weather and best season, I cant say much as I've been in these places only in August and September. However, in September, it already starts becoming cold throughout Ladakh, especially in the high altitude areas like Manali-Leh highway and Changthang. Secondly, by september, the little rains and water in Ladakh has already finished and the landscape appears more brown and dull because the grass and other foliage has already become dry. However, in August, once the region has had some rains/snow melt in July, all the grass, plants and vegetation looks green and thus the landscape looks more colourful. In August, its quite warm also in most places. Thus, go overthere in August. However in August, usually there will not be any snow anywhere and the water streams will also be quite full. But if you're cycling Ladakh, it may take a lot of time depending upon the route that you choose and so try to adjust your schedule such that you finish everything by August end or latest by mid September, even if it means to start in June/July. I may cycle in Spiti this year as its one place thats left for me to see. Message me on Instagram and I can give you a Spanish person's contact who has cycled from Spiti, Lahaul, Shinkula, Padum, Pensila, Kargil, Leh, Nubra valley route in July-August 2018. @@kcshankar5 I would suggest taking the Padum-Pensila-Rangdum-Panikhar-Kargil-Leh route rather than the new route via Lingshed, Photoksar and Wanla because in the former route you will encounter only one pass, Pensila and that too at a lower altitude than the Singela and Sirsirla passes on the new route. Secondly, the route via Pensila is definitely more scenic as you see a number of huge, tall, snow capped mountains including Nun-Kun which are above 7000m high and the gem known as Drang Drung glacier. Thirdly, there will be more villages encountered on the Pensila route and that will help if you need stay, food or help options. One suggestion : if you have a spare day at Padum then you can use it to take a short tour upto the Zanskar river gorge and maybe even the Lingshed village and then come back to Padum. This way you'll see a bit of the new route aswell as not miss out on the more spectacular old route via Pensila. Enjoy!
