Lol some of the comments! I'll chuck some stats into the fray! The fact of the matter is that lady train drivers are still a rare commodity. . 3 years ago in the UK there were approx. 19,000 train drivers, of which @3% of passenger drivers were female, increasing much by then as there is a political 'drive' to get more into this work. So, of that number, @1500 are locomotive drivers, of which only 12 were female drivers. I think its 11 now. I know there to be NO female drivers in Finland for example . . Still one of the rarest jobs on the planet for a lady. In all my years spottin and fottin, mainly around London (2/3 of all trains go in/out/around London), i never saw one lady driving a loco or HST, and just 2 or 3 driving passenger trains. And unbeknown to me, I didnt even spot my future girlfriend driving a loco where she was driving them during 80/90's and 00's where i frequented often, in OC and SF depots, Willesden junction etc, thats how rare she was but thats another story!! . . David Howarth really hard work ? Are you talking about when steam was still going ? It's fair to say that the railways have become cleaner and less demanding on drivers. But who's the say the male drivers today would have been able for the work back then ?

Dont think they would , same as truck drives can you se them changing a wheel at the side of the road ...we used to have to do ...even the big super singles ...would lady truck drivers do that , would they clib between loco and rake and connect or disconnect ?? ..dont think so ..

I used to work with Maureen and Margaret at Tyne and wear Metro then Grand Central 2007. I'm sure they'd rather be called women than ladies.

One of my Facebook friends that since she was a toddler has written qualified as a train driver. She's driving electric trains rather than the diesel machine you see there.
