These comments about the audience looking like their at a funeral I feel are really unfair. Maybe GG asked for an intimate performance.... maybe they were in shock, star struck, thought the sign outside was a prank or "shock-horror" they're just being respectful. Personally, i'm glad they were reserved because it gave us Lady GG's clear voice which deserves hearing for what it is, A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Besides, you'd feel a dick wouldn't you being the only one screaming? It would be so selfish too; ruining the enjoyment of others ?? So I think everyone should lay off the audience!

It wouldn't be strange if they did look at her like if they were at a funeral since her aunt Joanne died at a young age (according to her documentary 5ft2 at Netflix). I would think this song is very personal to her because of the family bond and also since one of her names is Joanne (according to Wikipedia). I'm not a die hard Gaga-fan, but I do enjoy her music a lot, and I think she showed one of her best sides in the documentary. Fragile yet strong, just as most people are. Because at the end of the day she is just another human being trying to survive this harsh world.

I've never left a KZbin comment before so this is weird for me, please bear with me. My Grandmother passed away shortly before this song was released. I've always recognized Lady GaGa's talent but never truly liked her until this song. My Grandma's name was Joan, very similar to Joanne. When I heard this song for the first time I had flashing memories of my Grandma. I instinctively changed the lyrics to Joan. This is my comfort song and I think and ponder over the lyrics all the time. Thank you for it, Lady GaGa. You now have a fan for life from me.

Not sure if anyone else picked up on it, but I think the deeper and more personal reason why she dedicated the last chorus repeat was not just for those who get sad and lonely around the holidays. Her aunt Joanne, to whom the song is dedicated to, passed away the week before Christmas and is more than likely a sore time for her and her family.
