Yes the first time I heard it was when it was for princess Diana and then I realized that it wasn't for her it was actually for Marilyn Monroe and they rewrote it and I still sing it as if it is her song. I guess the first time you hear something is what you want it to be all the time. I still listen to the one from Maryland but I find myself singing the lyrics to Diana's version

I don't know how anyone can listen to this song and not end up in tears. Elton was the right man to sing this tribute to Diana. He really makes you feel the pain of her loss. You can feel his pain through his singing, as well. Such a terrible loss at that time, and still today.

Elton John originally composed this song in honor of the memory of Marilyn Monroe, but as you can see by this video, this song can be applied to many lives, like Princess Diana's and also the life of Ryan White for example. It can also be applied to so many lives cut short. Our lives truly are like candles in the wind. That's why we should let people know while they are living how much they mean to us.

I was on Holiday in Mexico . Early Sunday morning August 31 1999 Unforgettable !!! Arrived at the Resort Lobby where l was to meet up with a tourist guide. To my surprise there were many employees from housekeeping to The Resort’s executives , guests many people all were ONE in mourning many crying and others in complete shock! I asked a young woman that was holding a newspaper to her chest. What had happened, apparently she didn’t speak English just showed me the news ppaper. Headline showed a picture of princess Diana and a mangled automobile! Then a desk clerk said to me in English “ Our Princess Diana has Died “ Me an American woman that grew up loving and admiring Diana learned for the first time that Diana was in fact THE PEOPLE’S PRINCESS!! All people!! Rest in Paradise beautiful soul! 27 years after in it still hurts 🤍😭🤍

I was in Glasgow when Princess Diana died and I found out this terrible piece of a news coming back to England 2 days later. I cryed all the time along the road reading the newspaper while my beloved husband was driving. It was not "general hystery" like someone said. With my collegues in Compton I cried during her funeral, broadcasted worldwide on TV. We were sincerely upset and moved. She was a marvellous and sensible person. I will love her forever even if she didn't know me. After her death I thought everything could happen and this was a shock for me. 25 years ago my husband and I were both 32. He unlackly died in 2011 for a GBM which is a letal brain cancer.

Him being one of the Princess' closest friends i cannot even imagine how hard it was to sing that song. I was 5 when I watched this live in America and of course at the time I didn't realize who she was. I just knew she was a princess of England.
