I'm mesmerized watching the little ones jumping from their nest. Does the mother instinctively know when they're all out and in the water?

Ducks cannot count. Mom knows they are all out when there is no more peeping from inside the box

Hi Lady Hawk... This is so neat! Imagine leaving the nest 24 hours after hatching.... That's mind-boggling! Brave little souls. What do they eat? Insects? Oh, wait... water insects too, right.... like mosquito larvae and such? And what a beautiful lake area. OH! I found this site and it's wonderful.... lots of information all about the Hooded Merganser > www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/hooded-merganser They are gorgeous birds!
@ladyhawk7 жыл бұрын
Hi Imturmene - yes a great site to learn about the hooded merganser and also Cornell. I am so glad you enjoyed this. It happens so fast and them they are gone - off with Mom to explore.

Well at least this form of "brood parasitism" is not harmful to other species like that of cowbirds. For a few short years a while back I began to have an influx of cowbirds where I live. I noticed less and less cardinals during that span. I figured the cowbirds were invading the local cardinal nests and that the baby cowbirds were winning the battle over the cardinal chicks. In recent years things seemed to right itself as most of the cowbirds moved on and the population of cardinals got back to normal. I hope the cowbirds stay away since I enjoy watching the cardinals. Anyways, great video Lady Hawk!

The females would go into the nest box and lay there eggs. Then when the babies hatch, they jump out when 24 hours old! Thank you juanita moreno! This was such a great moment to capture -I literally stayed up for hours to make sure I would not miss this exodus!! Next March I hope to capture this again!!

Now their troubles begin...If every pair of ducks produced 20 grown ducks the world would soon be overrun with ducks so you know that 4 out of 5 (at least) will be dinner for something long before they grow up.

Hi Catherine you are correct they will not return to the box. They will swim and walk on the ground now.
