Dimash loves traditional music and incorporates Kazakh instruments in many songs ❤️🔝🎤 The gentleman playing the Kobyz is master Olzhas Qurmanbeck, the best player in Kazakhstan 🎻🔝 Kobyz is an ancient tool of the peoples who lived in the East, including nomads. It was used in ancient times by steppe shamans-healers for various rites. Kobyzy is made from a single piece of wood. This is one of the oldest ways of making musical instruments in the history of mankind. It is not due to technical backwardness or the lack of metal devices. According to the ancient beliefs of many people, only in a single piece will the living singing soul of the tree remain, which will sound in the instrument. The open body and strings of the kobyz from a bunch of 30-60 untwisted horse hair give a very thick, overtone-rich timbre. The flute called Sybyzgy - made of reeds or wood 50-70 cm with 3-5 holes, which is particularly common in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The instrument was particularly popular with shepherds, although difficult to play, and was also used by storytellers. These storytellers, called Akyn in Kyrgyzstan, are a central element of Central Asian culture. They went across the country and told stories and legends in chants and with music, for example with a Sybyzgy. Finally The dombyra (домбыра) is a lute-style instrument. It is an ancient and quintessential piece of Kazakh culture and identity. In its most popular form, the dombyra has two-strings strung down a long, skinny neck and a pear-shaped body, flat at the front and rounded on the backside. The dombyra is, in fact, so important to Kazakh national identity that there is a popular saying: “Naǵyz qazaq qazaq emes, naǵyz qazaq - dombyra” (Нағыз қазақ қазақ емес, нағыз қазақ - домбыра), which, translated, means “A real Kazakh is not a Kazakh, a real Kazakh is a dombra.” 💙💛🔝🌹🌹❤️🎤👏👏👏

Isn't it great, isn't Dimash great? 🤗🥰 I love all his songs, no matter what style, no matter what language he sings in, but his songs in Kazakh are something special. Dimash is a great patriot, he loves his homeland more than anything (except his family) and you can feel his Kazakh soul, especially when he sings in Kazakh. By the way, the name of the Kobyz artist is Olzhas Qurmanbek. He is a good friend of Dimash and an absolute master on this instrument. He can be seen playing Kobyz in several videos of Dimash. Dimash's big goal has always been to introduce his homeland and the beautiful culture of Kazakhstan to the whole world. That's why he incorporates Kazakh instruments into his music wherever he can. Especially the Kobyz and the Dombra. Most of his fans have never seen or heard about the Kobyz before Dimash introduced it to us through his music and his videos. Me neither. Today I love Kazakh instruments, especially the Kobyz. It is a wonderful instrument that can phenomenally convey the sounds, atmosphere and vastness of the Kazakh steppe. It's downright magical. Since you asked: The Kobyz (co-biz) or kylkobyz (keel-co-biz) is an ancient Turkic bowed string instrument, spread among Kazakhs, Karakalpaks, Bashkirs, and Tatars. The Kyrgyz variant is called the kyl-kyyak. The qobyz has two strings made of horsehair. The resonating cavity is usually covered with goat leather.

The same Kobyz player plays a big part in "Stranger" and "Qairan Elim". At the beginning of the song, he and the man with the rain stick are imitating the sounds of wind, wolves, and barking dogs which the men would hear as they were being force marched to participate on the Russian side of WW 1 in 1916. There is an earlier version of this song which gives the historical setting in the description of the video.

Here he is singing in his native Kazakh. This is a great kazakh poem set to music by a Kazakh composer (I forget his name). But this particular arrangement is Dimash and the musicians here. The poem is in the melancholic tradition and describes a very difficult period in Kazakh history when young men were conscripted into war, forced to leave everything and travel far away to take up their posts. The instruments play environmental impressions; the barking dogs as the young soldier leaves his village in the night; the howling wolves in the high mountain passes; the winds blowing through the alpine forests; the morning life on the great Eurasian steppe.

kazakh folk instrument called Kobyzebysk. There is another Salmaltau done in full production, like they. are out on the Kazahk plains with animal sounds in the night. On the wall are direct styles of Dombras, different progressions of Dombras from over the years. Dimash' Grandfather is a great Dombra player. All young boys learn to play Dombra & some girls also.

This song is a Kazakh folk song written from the horrific time when thousands and thousands of Kazakh men were forced to fight in WW1 for Russia. Kazakhstan has bee invaded by many different countries (having to constantly fight for its independence) for its rich resources; for hundreds of years. There is so much pain from the loss of lives in this song. Dimash captures the rich history and the emotion of the song perfectly. The kobyze is the name of the 2-stringed instrument that the man was playing. It was considered a very sacred instrument for many years and only shaman were allowed to play it. It really does sound like wind and animals…. Which is what it is known for 😀

The kobyz ( ko be iz) is a sharman’s spiritual ceremonial healing instrument that became the violin. It has 2 horsehair strings, a twin open chamber, and a lower chamber covered in goatskin, and is played with a bow and all that beautiful hand and finger manipulation to produce both music and animal and nature sounds from the Great Steppe. Dimash also frequently plays a dombra, also with 2 strings and deep half round almost bowl with wooden face. It is Turkic/Kazakh played with fast strumming as they don’t echo like guitars. These are in all his concerts with traditional singing and dancing. Dimash loves his nation, it’s disturbing history, it’s music and artistry, and produces it at every opportunity. It is a democracy since the USSR collapsed, of about 18 million people, 60% Muslim, and 30% Christian. Dimash/ Dinmukhammed Kanatuly Qudaibergen(Given By God) was known to be destined for this in the womb. He has been awarded as a Kazakhstan National Treasure by the President. This song is about a young man amongst others, who were conscripted by Russia in the 1st World War, and were travelling and struggling on foot along the Great Steppe to their appointment, and wondered whether he would get to see his elderly parents ever again. Beautiful reaction again. It is great to see people react with genuine love for Dimash. He is such a treasure.

I love this one too! I really hope "Daybreak" Bastau 2017 is on your list. It's important to get the backstory of the song (Gloria Wu channel from The Singer performance.) He performed it on The Singer, but was really sick at the time. The Bastau performance is one of the most powerful performances I have ever witnessed.

Here is playing the best Kobys player in the world, Dimash’s friend Olzhas Qurmanbeck. This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak.
