From what I remember of the movie hype, the dress was specifically designed to look good both dry and wet -- and I'm guessing, although I don't think I've ever heard it said, chiffon was chosen to reduce the wet weight as well. That the dresses are different is not surprising, then -- they would have been made for different scenes/situations. The comments about 90s photography made me smile, since Titanic was admired at the time for its photography, even by people who hated the plot.

Uh! Catching that bit in the seam -- it never fails. And the whole color puzzle -- been down that trail, too. But, it's coming along. Can't wait.

It's coming out so beautifully. Dying poly satin is my number one nightmare. You never know what it's going to do. I think the reason you're having problems with your slip showing is due to your left shoulder sitting lower than your right. Maybe if you put in a sneaky dart on top of your left shoulder in the cream portion, it would hug closer instead of hovering.

Whew! Amazing how such a seemingly simple gown can incorporate so many different details to come to life! Sounds like you'll be in pretty good shape. Hope you have a grand time on the Queen Mary and at Costume College! Someday I'll get there or CostumeCon. Safe travels!

On the plus side, since there were so many different dresses, it means you can’t do it ‘wrong’ it’s just another variation on the dress!

This is so impressive! There is so much detail in that dress, for all that it looks like a simple, casual frock (by Edwardian standards, at least.) I'm considering going to Costume College next year, just so I can have an actual deadline for the Victorian ensemble I've been poking at for the past 3 1/2 years. I'm sure Dora would have been happy to protect you from the eight-legged crunchy snack.

I have this same problem. I want to recreate a version of one of the dresses from Roman Holiday, and there's 2 dresses used with completely different fabric, and another shot from inside the dress that is even more different (completely different understructure). They use a strange understructure I can't figure out, and I prefer it as the dress flows more, but it is made of yards of heavy brocade and definitely needs a lot of support. I guess you just have to pick which one you like best, with a bit of what is most practical!

Movies have also post production colour correction, so thats why most of the times, they dont match the displayed versions, on top of that like you said, the replicas in museums are not always faithfull to the ones in the movie.
@LadyRebeccaFashions

The museum ones in this case are actually from the movie, but my guess is they're ones that weren't used in water scenes.

I wish I had known beforehand that you were doing this project! I always thought that as far as the two purple layers in between the pink sash and lace, that the top part was more of a periwinkle blue, and then the bottom part was more kind of violet, pinkish. Same thing with the bottom layers. The very bottom appeared to be a very pale periwinkle blue. At least to me. Although I’m not sure about the very end, the most layer, which I think was the underskirt. Either way I love your version it came out beautiful!

I think you are stressing way too much over the dye colors. Any fabric is going to look different in different lighting and certainly when it is wet. I think the colors are coming out beautifully. And yes, your long red curly hair is just right as well. Everyone will know who you are representing!

Take a safety pin tuck horizontally in the slip. It looks good! For the shoulder, I would actually use a couple (4 or so) tiny rows of horizontal stitches in the pack just below the shoulder seams and tack them to the under layer, sneaking out that extra bit on the left.

Yeah, I feel like since the second half of the movie is generally shot darker, the dress itself often winds up looking darker too.

Is there any room in the slip to temporarily pinch down the top center back? It looks like it wouldn’t take much to get it to hide.

As to your dye problem, those actual dresses would be dirty and have gotten soaked. I think its more realistic that the dress would have been "perfect" before she entered the water.

I have heard that when dyeing, different pigments have different dying times. Like that a specific blue pigment migth stick to a fabric faster than a specific red one, even though they are of an equal amount. And basically every store bought fabric dye contains a mix of pigments, that are not guaranted to 'stick' at the same rate just to end up a specific shade after following the instructions. Dyeing is chemistry not painting, unfortunately. I cannot verify that what I heard is true, chemistry is not my thing, and I have never tried to dye poly fabrics, so it is anyones guess if that is what happened for you.
