Laeger’s CRF450R Hybrid (TRX250R Geometry) Walk Around - DBC Racing

Short walk around video of the Laeger’s CRF450R hybrid we built last winter. This frame specifically is 1 of 7 original 250R geometry chassis that Mark Laeger built before selling the remaining CRF frames to CT Racing. Its received a handful of upgrades since we initially rebuilt it. Hope you enjoy!

Man, glad to see some Curtis Sparks love, I just put a sparks mx pipe on my R the other day, love the way it sounds and the new nasty midrange hit. If I ever build another 4joke, I’m definitely gonna go with sparks on it. I just don’t ever see Sparks pipes on the 450 4jokes like I always did back in the day.

It can be done and has been done. But is not recommended, a major headache. According to others who have one, there are multiple issues that have to be resolved. First off It has tiny engine bay, with a taller 450 engine...theres clearance issues with the head/valve cover underneath the gas tank. Then once you resolve that, your still not done, the carburetor and intake have a tiny amount of room to squeeze through the cramped rear frame section with a rear shock directly in the way. A 450 engine requires more airflow so you will need a custom intake setup, they also have a bigger carburetor that has to fit somewhere, and if you plan to run an airbox, you still have more redesigning/engineering do. Thats not all... If the crf450 engine doesn’t have an electric starter, then the rearward style kicking is another issue. I’ve seen guys with aftermarket frames that have a flip-top subframe-designed to flip the seat and rear fenders up in the air so the kicker can have full range of motion for kickstarting. If you don’t have something custom like that for this stock frame, you’ll have to cut a huge amount off the rear fender for kick starter clearance. Or just caveman it and remove the seat and rear fenders, set them down on the ground, get back on crank it, get off and re-install the seat n fenders. Just hope it don’t stall out. Think theres a clearance problem with stock CRF kick start lever too. Most builds I’ve seen use a 1998 YZ250 kick lever. Exhaust will need to be custom, or if your lucky, find a used one that was already made for this setup. I’m not even sure what other issues there are using a stock R frame. I could be missing more issues. I’ve never done this build and this is what I recall reading online. There may be more problems. From what I’ve read, the best route for this hybrid is buying an aftermarket 250r frame designed for a crf 450 engine. And it still requires some out of the box thinking, custom fitting/handyman skills to make the setup work. The aftermarket frame reduces a lot of the headache but not entirely.
