I can already say: This vehicle IS a gamechanger! The field test that the fire department of Berlin had with a prototype of a similar vehicle for over a year exceeded every expectation and showed some small things that needed improvement but in the meantime they ordered FIVE vehicles for the regular service. Some of the biggest advantages is the fast acceleration and braking, (Ever seen a Tesla accelerating? Well, this truck can do that too!) the all-wheel-steering what makes the vehicle VERY agile, the big cabin and the larger compartments that allow it that no, or less, equipment needs to be stored on the roof anymore and everything is easy to access.

a typical ICE engine will need a full rebuid after (on average) 133k miles, and the average EV battey will now comfortably last 200k miles or 15-20 years... thats increasing litterally year on year. @Ichqwertzu2 жыл бұрын
To add onto what pax und peace said: This truck is basically the same one that was tested in Berlin, just adapted to the american market. During the 13 month testing period they responded to 1600 calls, driving 14000km (8700mi) in the process. Out of those calls over 95% were handled completely electric! And even though they had some problems charging it at first (partly due to the charging station, but there also was a bad software update at some point), it never went out of service. Overall the Berlin Fireservice was very happy with the performance and they want to purchase more of them. Its obviously impossible to say how it will perform after 10+ years of service, but it does look very promising. Especiallys considering that this was a prototype, so some kinks were to be expected.
@kilodeltaeight2 жыл бұрын
I honestly expect it will perform very well, given the results in Berlin, and where it’s being used in LA makes perfect sense: at the foot of the Hollywood Hills in Little Armenia. Even the flat, straight roads there are either incredibly narrow and tight or so congested a typical American truck struggles to get through. Once you’re in the hills, the extreme grades and curves flat-out exclude any American-normal truck or engine on size alone, much less on engine power to haul 500-1000 gallons of water up there. Electric traction is going to be revolutionary there. I’m not worried about charging either. Cali and LA have long led the country and arguably world in charging infra for electric cars. If the stations DCFC fails, there are numerous other DCFC chargers within a mile or three, including several owned directly by the city. Indeed, many blocks in the Hollywood area have 1-2 city-owned Level 2 chargers mounted on power poles, meaning the truck could even plug in while on-scene at some incidents, if they wanted.

Perfect example, one of the local stations has a quint which practically runs off an onboard computer. Meanwhile, you’ve got workhorses from the 90s to early 2000s running the show for our county’s fire protection, thats not to say these rigs don’t fail, they do, but it’s mostly due to age, not poor manufacturing. how well is this thing going to be running in 20 to 30 years? @@EnjoyFirefighting And as a german firefighter i can confirm that this truck was ideal for Berlin. They have a really high callout volume and even higher percentage of urban building fires compared to other big german cities. They also are, with Frankfurt am Main, a city which has a similar system as US Departments, with smaller but therefore significantly more stations all over Berlin. While other german career departments often have big stations with a lot of trucks and personel using the "Löschzug"-Tactic (2 trucks, 1 ladder and a small truck with incident commander and digital workspaces), they also now try to use the "single-truck"-tactic, sending only one truck with a low rank officer. For this tactic the Rosenbauer is the right truck. And on big fires it´s supported by the "Löschzug". Something I've noticed with almost all American tricks is just how empty they are. Even this thing still has a lot of room left for stuff. Just comparing that to both our trucks, which hold a lot more gear it's baffling how empty American tricks are. for example: our main fire truck has 1800+ feet of hose on board, 2000L of water, one fixed pump, one portable pump, a portable generator, a fixed light mast plus two portable ones, a Ventilator, two ladders, four pumping hoses (larger and stiff to take water from lakes etc.), A small electric pump to clear basements, a plethora of normal tools, two rescue boards, four additional SCBA bottles, a sweeper set, 6x10l canisters of foaming agent, 6x10l canisters of oil binder, a medical bag, one pre-connect, two loops, two additional smaller nozzles plus one larger nozzle, a Monitor, and plenty more which I'm probably forgetting right now.

As someone who has held 3 “working” ranks in the fire service, I think this engine has potential. Change is good , if we’re improving delivery. But, with fire fighting, sometime the simple things are the best things. My experience has taught me that electricity and water don’t always play well together. For me, an electronically controlled discharge valve is a red flag. I always liked my driver’s to be engineers, not a chauffeur. What’s the GVW of that rig? Might play havoc on the roadways.
@emmata9811 ай бұрын
electronically controlled only means that there is an electric controller controlling the valves, the valves themself could be pneumatic, like they are on todays engine with such automations. Also with todays tech you can have way more than good enough seals to make it safe. Like you also protect electronics from the rain etc succesfully. The European RT version has a maximum gvm of 18 (metric) tons, which is standard for bigger engines (15 or 18 t are the 2 common classes for the chassis). So half of what normal semis are allowed to have (40 to 44 tons), so perfectly fine for roadways.
@davidbryant28722 жыл бұрын
Interested in the hybrid design. The LAFD said they were pleased to be reducing the Diesel emissions to zero, but they aren't really accomplishing that. It isn't unlikely that the equipment will be needed for the stated 2 hour battery capacity, at which point the Diesel "range extender" kicks in. So, how do the emissions from the range extender compare with a conventional truck's Diesel engine during such extended operations? Are the emissions standards for large truck engines (if there are any) actually stricter than for the range extender? Is anything special done to minimize the Diesel exhaust from the range extender so that it does not cause the same sort of exposure to fire crews that the LAPD said they are trying to reduce with this gear?
@brianb-p65862 жыл бұрын
The standard applied would be the same regardless of whether the truck is conventional or series hybrid. Heavy trucks do have emissions standards (the increasingly demanding standards drove Caterpillar right out of the over-the-road engine market) but they are not more strict than for lighter vehicles. The BMW engine used will be no worse (and likely better) than a traditional engine. I assume that operation beyond the battery capacity is so rare that diesel emissions will be very small compared to conventional operation.
@markdejong23092 жыл бұрын
The emissions are actually a lot lower, since it uses an diesel engine from an BMW SUV, and it powers the generator and not the pump or the engine, so it runs at an constant low RPM. The Rosenbauer RTX is already in use at the fire departments of Berlin, Amsterdam and Vienna, and especially in Berlin they used it at several large incidents and even when the range extender kicks in, it's incredibly silent, which ensures an much calmer incident site. And as Brian said, operation beyond battery capacity is rare. Let's also not forget that this is an prototype vehicle. An operational prototype, but still an prototype which they will improve.

Interesting ; It seems that all the features shown were well thought out and executed , however I still fail to see the practicality of having an electric fire truck. His main concern seemed to be the noise that a traditional fire truck makes and how it affects the fireman's hearing . Earplugs anyone ? , what about the noise from the raging inferno along with roof collapse, shattering windows , explosions , walls collapsing ? ? Does not sound very practical if it has to remain working at a warehouse fire for two or three days , how much diesel are you going to burn up recharging those batteries ? How long are those batteries expected to last under heavy use and how much to replace. Overall impressive layout and features congrats on bringing it to life .
@emmata9811 ай бұрын
the loudest things on a structure fire are typically the ICE's running, and every significant noise you can reduce (or here almost ellimiate) is a very good thing. Esp since explosions and collapses are way more rare and don't happen constantly for the hours of time you are on a big emergency, where you have those big incidents. It is more effecient to charge the batteries Dieselelectric than just use the ICE directly in a drivetrain, so negligeable (it's a (for US-standards) small car diesel engine optimised to use in the generator setup), and with very good numbers coming from the Berlin FD (over 95 % in their 1 year test as a normal engine, of all emergencies were fully electric, without the generator running at all) it is only needed in the rare cases, and even then at a later phase or on the drive back to the station. Also you don't work the truck 100% through those times, so the generator will shut off (even under full load btw), so it will be silent again, and will not be audible constantly like ICE-trucks. This is a right to repair thing mostly, but it should be over 10 years. Otherwise you can go 60 to 90 minutes of full pump use (which is unrealistically high of a load) before you reach the 20 % mark, where the generator starts.
