great Review. I have similar Laguna and after meeting Alex, switched to the Carter roller bearings vs the ceramic. Much improvement and should have done it sooner, even though it was not cheap.

Thank you for a very good review of the Laguna bandsaw. Four and a half minute out from the beginning of the video I mean to hear you will show how to teightend the blade to get the correct tension, because of a not so good tention indicator on the Laguna. Did you forget that?

I found this video because I've had the same issue with the guides coming loose, glad I'm not alone. This has resulted in a number of blades being broken, the cost of which probably could have paid for the carter guides. This will have to be my next upgrade.

Ok... of all the review vids on the BX14, I'll leave my comment on this video. Just finished setting mine up, 220V version, and performing test cuts. Wow! Fantastic bandsaw. I cut a paper thin veneer, silky smooth finish, and fast like butter pushing through my 7" wide test piece of poplar (Resaw King 3/4" blade). Dunno why you'd replace the ceramic guides. As for the tension indicator, yeah, it's kinda hack-job, but it (a magnet) is effective when properly placed as per instructions.
@DesignCraftWorkshop8 ай бұрын
The key to your success was you just finished setting up yours. Out of the box, the guides were great for mine as well. After awhile...not so great. Hence why I swapped it out.

Thanks for sharing the experience. I have the 1412 having similar guide. I 've figured out it's not the fault of ceramic material, it's the design. Ceramic guides are actually provides more support to the blade so they are more precise. The Laguna's guide is just too flimsy . We have a local brand also uses ceramic guides, the ceramic piece is twice thicker and there is a large dovetail wedged into the Aluminum body so it won't come off as easily as the Laguna's. Moving to bearing type of guide is definitely more suitable for heavy duty use. For me I have changed the holding knobs to make it bigger to it can tighten down the guide firmer. For saw blades, have you tried Lenox Tri-Master, it's TCT and I thick it's more robust than Resawking?
@DesignCraftWorkshop2 жыл бұрын
Yea the knobs themselves were my biggest issue. And no I haven’t tried the Lenox brand. Have to check them out 🙌🏼

I have the same machine and hate the guides. It wears out blades and the heat buildup has caused me to change my tires twice and it has very little use.. I am upgrading to carter and if they don't help it's going out the door for scrap.

I really dislike the ceramic guides and the knobs loosening up as well. I have had the blocks come unglued. If you don't catch it in time you can ruin a blade. I will upgrade to the Carter kit. The plate that the blade goes through should have dust holes in it and maybe magnets to hold it down as well. The bottom guides are difficult to get at unless you raise the table top to maximum tilt or remove it altogether. The sparks are sort of unpleasant coming from the blocks when you reposition them as well.
@DesignCraftWorkshop Жыл бұрын
So far the upgrade has been great. The bottom is still a bit hard to get to but I rarely switch blades so it isn’t a huge problem for my shop. I would say once I set the guides, it doesn’t move which makes using the bandsaw much more pleasant.
@LizzardFish1 Жыл бұрын
installed the bearing kit and you were right! Made a huge difference. Love it. $326 bucks but great quality..

I have also had this bandsaw for about two years. I also hate the guides, especially the bottom one. Something else that bothers me is that 3/4 blades never seem to track correctly, so re-sawing can be a issue.
@DesignCraftWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Yeah, 3/4” can be tricky. I try to keep the bottom of the gullet aligned at the center of the wheel. It helps a lot.

Really helpful vid. Thanks. I just got a 14 Twelve with the Laguna 3/4" resawking and I have cranked the tension up almost as far as I can crank it and I'm still getting some flutter. I have to pull the guides out 3/16" or so to keep them from touching the blade. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. It tracks fine and cuts beautifully though it drifts a bit. Have to do more reading I guess!
@pipedreamfretworks Жыл бұрын
Oh and I sooo wish I'd seen this vid BEFORE I bought my 14 Twelve cause I bought the mobile kit and it really does pretty much suck. I have a Bora on my table saw and it's a dream. Dang.
@DesignCraftWorkshop Жыл бұрын
I would double check the alignment if you're still drifting or check your feeding. Too much pressure can introduce drift.

You're welcome and thanks for tuning in! Here is the guide I purchased. I like it a lot more. The blade doesn't drift as it use to and I don't have any issues with the guides going loose. However, like all bearings it needs to be cleaned and maintained. carterproducts.com/lag-01-2856

So the machine is basically crap? Two more years since you made this video, what are your thoughts now? What I take from your video is that the bolts unscrew themselves, the ceramic bearings are shit, the saw vibrates and the wheel base is useless? You said "those are the things I love about this machine" but what are those things exactly?
@DesignCraftWorkshop5 ай бұрын
There are some updates I think Laguna should make especially the bearing, which is probably the biggest factor since it effects the cut quality. The wheel base isn't useless, but it would help with mobility if there were 4 swiveling wheels if you're in a small shop and need to have it move around. I'm in a larger shop now and the machine doesn't move from it's location. Overal, the machine cuts great as long as you set it up propertly like any other bandsaw. I still have the machine and haven't needed to upgrade to anything larger.
