Months? Try years upon years 😢 California takes forever to get building permits and with the new laws for homes passed, mandatory solar panels, etc. it will slow things down. The homes in Palisades will take even longer due to the CA coastal commission.

I have some first hand experience. Under normal conditions with full insurance - I didn't see any cash in my hand for 3 months. Mortgage, bills etc. don't stop and you'll be paying for a temporary home on top. As you just watched - expect a years ... long process. The best advice I can offer is this....1. Call insurance ASAP and incessantly - don't give up and don't listen to "your insurance is cancelled etc." investigate - they try everything to NOT pay and you need to be sharp. 2. Work your butt off .... get relocated and start stock piling the money - chop wood so to speak - you're gonna need it. TV was for yesterday - I literally cancelled cable as a single woman going through this. When you get through this.... insurance for me was 10x the original for the next 5 years and it wasn't my fault...I was in the USA when it happened - tenant tipped a candle. God Bless - the up side... you learn to detach completely from "things" - big woop ! So get up... make a list and start on step 1 - You Got this like collecting an egg from a chicken. You lived in the most difficult economy and you thrived - You Got This.

You will be in my prayers along with all of the people in North and South Carolina and California.

Trump is gutting FEMA as I type this. He wants to dissolve the agency altogether and divert the funds to his corporate loyalists. He is also actively hostile towards states that didn’t vote for him. Lahaina is F’ED. The corporate raiders are en route.

Thankyou for this latest update , my heart goes out to the people of Lahaina. As an Australian who has visited Lahaina many times I find it very hard to understand why the rebuilding progress has been so slow. Watching the current fire storm ripping thru LA is heartbreaking but I can't help thinking what the devastated areas will be like in 511 days.
@benfreiler405421 күн бұрын
I completely agree. Lahaina is going so slow, but the Palisades in LA are going to be rebuilt quickly as its one of the most expensive zip codes in the US. But I’m so sad for my country in general. Catastrophic wildfires are happening almost annually now. I know Australia has had some very destructive wildfires too.
@Pencil-o1p15 күн бұрын
The state is heavily regulated. It takes years to approve one simple rebuilding plan. LA will be the same.
@benfreiler405415 күн бұрын
@Maui already approved a building plan, if there is a need for urgency, counties and jurisdictions can streamline permits for rebuilding as what happened in Lahaina. The building plan was mostly for Front street, as they didn’t want the business district to be so close to the water. But neighborhoods farther from the water were allowed to rebuild as soon as the debris was cleared.

I'm really impressed at how you're documenting this and the progress that is being made. My neighborhood lost 500 homes in the Thomas fire and 7 years later there are still some empty lots and homes just starting construction. thank you for the video update !!! I love seeing the progress. I wonder if it would be possible for you to do a tour of the temporary housing so that we could see what that is like. I appreciate that this was a huge disaster. I've been though. a few of my own, but I always wish that we as a country could do a better job. For instance the temporary housing after Katrina was just oo squalid. Sure people were grateful for having something. But one way to demoralize people is to put them into squalid conditions, when small improvements would go so far in making things feel more livable. Such as a small park with grass and a place for kids to play. Those kinds of things go a long way to helping people recover. A roof over your head is good.. but to thrive, we need to do better. Yes.. I understand that things take time. I just want us to have a better vision.

Jesse. Thank you so much for your updates. I am amazed at some of the progress but very distraught at the thought that the Stare is slowing some of it down in some areas. I made my first trip, since the fire, to Maui a few weeks ago on business and it was very emotional. My last trip was in July 23 just before the fire. We were scheduled to be in Kaanapali in August the week after the fire. Lahaina is my favorite place on earth and it is so sad to me to know that it will never be completely recovered in my life time. I hurt for the people of Lahaina because of the devastation and loss that they have suffered it makes my sadness pale. It is exciting to see the progress. It was also good to see that the wonderful folks of Lahaina seem to be doing well from all my interactions. I am with you that as much of the history than can be maintained should be. The smoke stack must remain. To lose all that history will make Lahaina just like any other town and it would not be special anymore. I would hope that Front Street would be rebuilt in a Disneyesque manner. Modern safe fire resistant buildings but that look exactly the way they did pre fire. Aged to look 100 years old to keep the charm of Lahaina intact. Bless all of the people of Lahaina and hope that the speedy recovery continues.

Been to Lahaina 3 times (would have been 4 times but the fire happened 2 weeks before we were scheduled to be there) and we told everyone that I know, this town was a must see and visit. One of, if not, the best and easiest town to walk and the people so friendly. We have sat for a couple hours under the Banyan tree, just watching people. Many great memories. At my age I will never get to see her anywhere, even in a more modern sense, what she was like before the fire. But I am so glad the town is rebuilding so others in years to come can experience the town like I have.

I was on Front Street at Wharf Center at the beginning of the devastating fire and saw smoke miles away and NOBODY in town, so I got out just in time to be alive today. Three weeks ago I heard about the Los Angeles fires and thought about finding vacant homes in West Maui, where I live now, to use as Temporary Housing. Maui County is now offering vacant Hotel rooms here, which I approve of, in spite of local opposition, even though it is only TEMPORARY ! Continue to spread Aloha. Again . . . Lahaina was one of the ports of call on our cruise from L.A. to Hawaii and the South Pacific early in 2020 right before the Covid mess hit. We loved Lahaina and certainly did our best to contribute to the local economy while we were there. It was heartbreaking to hear of the devastation and realize that several of the shops where we did business in old town were lost. Having visited the area and met shopkeepers and others in the area with our cherished firsthand memories of the town and Maui in general brings even more impact to the fire and recovery effort. We hope to one day visit Lahaina again.

coming in July. This will be the first time for my husband and kids to visit maui. I can't wait to show them all the things I love about the island. I haven't made it back since I was 20, and I'm 48 now. I hope to be able to visit as much of Lahaina as possible and help support the economy! Do you ever meet with visitors who have watched your videos? If so, I would love to set up a time to meet and say thank you for your videos.

Thank you for your updates and corrected information. I’d like to offer another misconception regarding FEMA. The denial of support from FEMA due to homeowners having insurance is a GLITCH. I’m currently experiencing the same thing in the LA fires. It was announced today 1/11/25 that the glitch is being resolved. People are encouraged to reapply. Please pass along this recent information to the La Haina residents affected by the fire. Thank you.

4:13 - Glad to see the tree seems to be OK. I hung out there for a day not long before the fires. Thanks for sharing this.
