My OCD was always centered around counting. It started when I was around 6. I always worried something would happen to my family if I didn’t do the counting rituals. As I got older I started to try and not do them and trained myself to limit them. So if I usually had to close a door 5 times I’d tell myself you can only do 2. The more I did this the easier it was for my brain to not do the rituals.

I suffered severe OCD as well throughout my high school days. I resonate a lot with what he said. Such as asking for reassurance from people around us, and also Specifically knowing that it’s irrational, yet continue doing it because it ‘feels right”. Thankfully I’ve been able to overcome it and be cured because much of my compulsions was caused by anxiety from environmental factors. Nonetheless, I think we should share this more often and shine light upon it so that we can de-stigmatize OCD.

So it always took him hours to get somewhere because he was convinced he just ran someone over. I had ocd tendencies as a child and I relate to and understand much of what he said. I think mine stemmed from my parents divorce though and ordering and checking things to gain a sense of control over my life. As a child I felt an extreme sense of anxiety with it and felt they were things I had to do or the anxiety and obsessive thoughts would consume me. The compulsions: the washing, the aligning, the checking, eases the feelings temporarily. That is ocd in a nutshell. I believe I grew out of it as well/just decided one day I was sick of it and couldn’t do it anymore. Never got formal treatment for it. Symptoms do still act up at chaotic times in life but overall it’s not a part of my life.

I left a previous comment about my experience with ocd but I’d humbly like to offer some advice for anyone suffering that cares to read it. If your ocd centers around counting and numbers: say you have to turn the light switch on & off 18 times for it to feel “right”, do it at a lower number and sit with it. Let the anxiety wash over and pass. Then the next time you’re doing the rituals, try an even lower number. That new number is the new “standard” of the ritual. Keep doing this until you get to 1. This is an “exposure therapy” that you can do by yourself at home for free. Do the same thing with washing or alignment. Just do it less and less than you normally would. Sit with the uncomfortable feelings. Over time it will not be as mentally painful and taxing. I wish everyone so much luck that is suffering.

I had it really bad as a child. I used to have to do simple things twice such as sitting down, flights of stairs etc. Overtime it's gotten better but I still have this voice in my head saying 'if you don't do this then your KZbin career is over' etc etc. Theres always some consequence that formulates in my mind if I try and avoid fulfilling any of my compulsory obsessions. Most of them are just house related things such as double checking the oven is switched off even though I know for certain it is. And always arranging my cupboards so that 70% of the food is on the left side (part of my obsession is things have to be proportionately more left than right). Sometimes if I'm walking down the street I will have to go back and do something differently such as walk through a different doorway, because in my mind if I walk through the wrong doorway then it will change my life for the worse. The list goes on and on but as someone who has dealt with this all my life its just become the norm and it doesn't bother me. I don't have any issue with hygiene like this dude tho. When I was a child, I had very minute symptoms of something. Mainly having to do with maintaining a 'symmetry of experience' essentially if I touched anything with a novel texture, like drywall or smooth marble, I would have to touch it with my other hand aswell. I still get the urge, but in a vague insubstantial way.

this has been my experience for most of my life. i knew it came under the ocd bracket but didn't know there was a name for this specific tendency.

When my OCD was more severe, I would spend around 4 to 8 hours and entire nights sometimes obsessing and acting out on compulsions which would make me sleep-deprived not to mention it takes me 3 times longer to do even the most mundane things and I really wish that side of OCD would get more awareness than the typical "oh this pattern is off and is irking me haha" shit you would see people say

I agree. A friend of the family was obsessed with keeping every piece of paper she touched --- kleenix, tp, french fry and burger wrappers, school work, books, etc. Later it turned out her dad was sexually abusing her. He's in prison now. She moved away and all I can hope is that she's gotten better.

Such a good video! The DSM V now doesn't consider OCD has belonging in the anxiety disorder family anymore, it's "a thing of its own" now!

I did the same thing with my body dysmorphia! I just kept telling myself I look normal.. over and over and over again. It’s still there, but I can go to work now. I can wear a normal sized shirt now. I can focus on my school work. To anyone out there struggling, you can get better :)

Body dysmorphia/ anorexia is under the same umbrella as OCD. I didn’t know that until I spoke to my therapist about it

My wife has OCD and for a while it was hell on Earth. She takes antidepressants and went through behavioral/ exposure therapy - which helped a lot. And exposure therapy is something that is supposed to work gradually with increasing levels of exposure over time. I'm grateful for the therapy that she went through and all the professionals involved. It was like the disease had taken her soul away and therapy brought it back.

Beccah R I agree people shouldn’t joke about illnesses whether they are mental or physical. It’s no joke to the people suffering from them. Would people find it funny if somebody joked about having cancer? No they wouldn’t. It’s a similar thing.

I appreciate this guys struggle. Unfortunately I feel like this is the corner ocd gets stuck in. It’s so much more than obsessive hand washing or worrying about germs. People never talk about the negative thoughts or obsessive thinking that over takes your mind.

Symmetry can be an OCD thing once it intrudes your life. I used to have to tap on both sides of my body to make it feel even and if I hit one side of my body,, I would have to hit the other

I do all these things and I haven't got OCD and I wasn't abused..I have emetaphobia (fear of nausea and vomiting). I'm not checker..but the contamination issue (like the toilet habits of others, you're right, people don't always wash their hands, gross) overides any medical interventions, either tablet form or CBT. It's always there for me. Jack you are amazing. I can't work with children or ill people.

i found this so interesting, I have OCD myself and it is so interesting to see how it affects others. it is really comforting to hear other people talk about this. My OCD caused me to have to repeat things over and over again. The worst thing is that you know it is irrational.
@blast30284 жыл бұрын
As I've come to terms with my OCD more recently after being diagnosed years and years ago but avoiding treatment I've thought about all the time that's been wasted with my obsessions and compulsions, and tallying all that time up and all the time not spent working on myself and pursuing my passions and it really depressed me. It invades every aspect of your life and thinking and the worst part is you know it's all irrational. Contamination obsessions are particularly bad, it makes stuff like cooking, eating and doing basic chores a nightmare. Thanks for the video

I struggled with it for quite a while without even knowing I had it, until about a year ago. Mine was based around contamination as well, a lot of what he’s describing. I even couldn’t eat around other people in case they moved around it or breath on it. It took me half an hour to have a bowl of cereal once. I ended up losing so much weight. Much better now after being on Prozac.

Thank you for sharing this. I grew up with extremely similar issues, and for years people say "oh im so OCD", and I always felt frustration, as if they watered down the hell i put myself through. at age 19 or 20, after years of abuse, i finally also just woke up with a "EFF IT!" attitude and I couldn't organize or count much of anything without slipping back into it. Now im sort of messy, but it is so much better being slightly messy than spending hours rocking, tapping and counting, color coding and cleaning things.

Whoever molested him when he was a child should pay for their behavior. Makes me mad that someone destroyed his whole childhood. I will NEVER understand what makes some people think they can do horrible things to others and just walk away like it is nothing.
