Beautiful place, been there several times, and never tire of it. In summer it's warm (hot) but cold water and in Winter bitterly cold, but stunningly beautiful at all time. (wife originates from Irkutsk, so we visit regularly)

I find it somewhat refreshing that the Deputy Environmental Minister spoke so freely about the pollution going into the amazing Lake Baikal. I feel that if it was in my area they would be trying to spin doctor it into the plant being good for the lake lol. I never knew there were fresh water seals and so many endemic species there makes this lake a wonder!

Did they ever close the plant?

You're right, Australian production, guess those guys down under are better at their Russian translation skills than I am...really enjoyed this, esp the part about it not being as deep as thought, (This video of another?) its in our text books at 10,000 feet deep 3,000+ m

i was born there. my native place. I've been there for 2 weeks last month. love Baikal, love Sibiria, my heart is still there. don't forget Russia extends across the whole of northern Asia and 40% of Europe. There are app. 160 ethnic nationalities. Some of them looks like chinees, mongolian... but they could be buryat, chukchi, khakas... It's the same like russian and polish or serbian, we look a like, we are the slavs but we are different.

for example, the town that is mentioned, ulan ude , has many mongolian migrant workers. some of them stay, as has been happening for centuries. it's a multi-ethnic area and yes, there are of course sometimes interracial marriages. there are also chinese workers, and koreans in the far east.

@foresthill107 you told me that the US census claims that there are "2.95 mln" russians in the USA, not 750,000. but why are we even arguing about the exact numbers? "slava svagoru" was writing about how the usa had many nationalities and was using all of his favorite ethnic slurs. i simply pointed out to him that there are also many russians in the usa. after that, he was completely silent.

man why cant they just leave this lake alone, they have factories on every other body of water, but this one is so special, if russia really cared about the lake they would shut down that mill

@foresthill107 i think that for some reason you are in denial that so many russians love the usa and want to live there. i don't know why. perhaps you're insecure in your identity or something... so keep on telling people how young you think they are and name calling because that's a really good way to show how mature and adult you are.

For sure. I was in Ulan Udi and I saw the most stunning woman yet. Asian features, tall, long black hair and almond shaped eyes. They were that light blue. Drop dead gorgeous. She caught me staring and gave me a dirty look. Probably thought I was a pervert, I couldn't help it though.

Because they are not 'russkies'. Ask them 'Are you Russian'? They would answer you: no, I'm buryat or I'm evenk or chukcha. They have their own languages (not Russian). In Russia, the word 'Russian' means ethnicity, and not citizenship.

I would so love to go to Russia and Siberia to experience is beautiful wonderful thing I currently live in Alaska and have all my life I'm sure it's just like Alaska only without fucking Trump probably Paradise
This part of the world is not Siberia, it's the Mongol Tungusic world. Today's Buryat and Mongolia were part of China's Qing Dynasty. Russians then occupied these areas but return to China, the Russian only allowed Mongolia to be independent and not Buryat. Why Buryat is not because of Lake Baikal.
