As a downhill skier with a stupidly stubborn streak, as a young man chomping at the bit to get back on the hills again, I many times booked weekend ski trips to northwest lower peninsula ski resorts in early January. I ended up driving through lake-effect white-outs as I neared Lake Michigan and enduring that atmospheric instability in the form of 40 mph wind filled with horizontal snowflakes. It was nearly impossible to dress warm enough to endure more than one downhill run. It was more than a bit unsettling to be on a chair lift being flung backwards by that wind while going uphill. It took awhile, but I learned that a trip in March was a far better experience.

So in Our ancestral Scottish mythology AnCailleach ( pronounced Ann Kyleeck) has woken up from her Northern winter home - also referred to as The Winter Witch- and as she is larger than life - she walks outside her cave and heads south - causing the great winds and flakes to fall from her skirts. She uses her walking stick to stamp the ground and make sure the roots and seeds and ensure they do not grow. Then she chases her Sister ( Bridgit or Spring) away to Costa Rica where Brigit hangs out with the King of Summer on the beach. 😸. Stay warm all!

Thanks for clearing the ways! I live in Erie, and I think it is not that the experts are wrong, it just has so much to do with the tiniest change in wind. Sometimes we get pummeled and Buffalo gets hardly anything, then Syracuse gets it. Stay safe!

I'm in the michigan thumb area. The wind often whips around and comes out of the east. When that happens we get lake effect from lake huron. It's not a rare occasion.

It really depends where you are located; some places get hammered, and some places get just a few flakes. I had the unfortunate experience of driving into Western New York on the I-90 East, right at the tail end of the November 2022 storm, having driven from Arizona. I was in a lifted full-size 4x4 Chevy TrailBoss, so I never got physically stuck, and was only turned away from being within maybe 5 miles of my townhouse in downtown Buffalo by the authorities in Hamburg, which was a bummer but totally understandable. However, having driven up the lake from Cleveland that night, there wasn't any sort of real world indicator of how bad it was until about Erie Pennsylvania, and even then, the Apple Maps routed us along very plowed roads up the lake. It was only then that we could see from a distance that a band of snow was clearly pummeling the downtown/central area of Buffalo, while it was clear where we were viewing on the 5.

With Lake effect off of Lake Michigan it's predictable. It's just hard to pinpoint where. However, if that wind is going from North to South it's a pretty good bet that LaPorte, Indiana is going to get a lot of it.
