Sometimes the cause isn't known. Lightning, a spark from a passing train, a curved piece of a broken glass bottle, even a discarded plastic water bottle with water still in it can focus sunlight passing through it, like a magnifying glass. All these have been known to start forest fires. And yes sometimes it's human carelessness or arson.
