Didn't realize Lake Jackson drained last year again. Really cool footage. The last time it happened was in June of 2012 and I've seen a video of it from the 2002 "drydown" as well. From what I've read and researched, apparently, these episodes are occurring more frequently than they used to. There are newspaper records of the lake draining going all the way back to the early 1800s, and it is likely a phenomenon that has been happening going back before that because the Muscogee (Creek) peoples called the body of water Okeeheepkee which means "disappearing waters."

Where does the water go??
@bobmiller68702 жыл бұрын
@@MrManfly From watching some other videos on Lake Jackson as well as doing some reading of articles from Fish and Wildlife and some of the geological research done on the "dry-down" phenomenon, lakes like Jackson in the state of Florida drain into the aquifer via the sinkholes in their limestone beds. The theory as to why these "dry-downs" occur is that they most likely have to do with dry periods when less rainfall over a period of time results in the water table dropping. During these periods, sediment and muck that blocked the sinkholes collapse, "unplugging" the hole(s), allowing the water to drain into the aquifer.
@krakhedd2 жыл бұрын
@@bobmiller6870 how is it safe to walk on as I think happens in this video? I'd expect the recently-underwater portions to be quite muddy and rather like "quickmud"
@bobmiller68702 жыл бұрын
@@krakhedd No idea to be honest Paul, but I would assume it would depend on the composition of the lake bottom whether it was mud and muck or sandy and rocky. We used to have a fairly large pond on the farm I grew up on, that was roughly 10 acres in size, and during dry spells, a good 2 or 3 acres of the bed would get exposed. A person didn't want to walk out onto the exposed bed of the pond even after a couple of weeks because they could sink up to their knees in the mud and muck once you broke through the dry crust that was on top. I lost a tennis shoe or two doing that as a lad. But Lake Lanier just across the pasture was a different story as it was mostly sand and clay when the lake bed was exposed. You could walk out on the bed when the lake was going down even a day after it was exposed.

Sink holes plug with sediment but fluctuations in ground water from time unplugs the holes and the lake runs down into the Florida Aquifer.
@Meriale462 жыл бұрын
This has happened in Lake Jackson several times since the 1950s... first in 1957 when the sinkhole first formed but it refilled the next year, again in 1981 and refilled in 1982, then again in 1999, 2006 and 2012. It refills each time but it goes into the same sinkhole everytime.

@@ek8710 🤔
@Meriale462 жыл бұрын
@@ek8710 The water drains into the Florida Aquifer. The Limestone Aquifer is roughly 20+ feet below the lakebed. So the water doesn't go that deep but it will empty back out and the water will rise through the sinkhole to refill the lake. This takes about a year to occur.
@Meriale46 Жыл бұрын
@@ek8710 It doesn't, it goes underground into the Aquifer... and Aquifer in an underground stream or lake. There are 2 types of Aquifers... an unconfined and a confined. The unconfined is where the water in Lake Jackson goes, the confined is under a layer of sediment or limestone (in this case limestone) that circulates the water and purifies it before pushing it back out. It's like natures water treatment.

glad you mentioned this as a joke because the government has underground cities and they been doing this for years. This isn't the first time a sinkhole emptied out a lake. I know truck drivers who go down there but they think it's just a storage hub. Wrong. There are these huge metal blast doors off to the side of the main road. Those go much deeper into the interior. With global warming soon expected to soar nobody will survive on the surface. The government knows this. We are currently at 420ppm co2. In 4 years we will go over 450. At that point it will start to release the 4 gigatons of methane gas trapped in the frozen perma frost and glaciers. From there we will rapidly and abruptly go straight over 500. This planet will soon be baking. On a side note they now want to change the name of climate change back to global warming because that is our greatest threat. It always has been. Under Bush they changed the name from global warming to climate change because global warming was considered to be too scary.
