Water has engulfed hundreds of homes around the shores of Africa’s third-largest lake.
The flooding of Lake Malawi has displaced thousands of people and forced lakeside resorts and other businesses to close.
Heavy rains in recent months have contributed to water levels in the lake reaching their highest in decades.
Residents say the government isn't doing enough to address the problem.
Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reports from Lake Malawi.

It has always been illegal to build in those areas, but corrupt council officials and absence of land surveyors has made pipo ignorant of this

Hmmmm….interesting. What Pam said isn’t entirely accurate. No one is alllowed to build here. The people who build here usually acquire this land in corrupt ways and it’s those officials that give them the plans that were mentioned here. This area floods every year and they’re continuously told to move and demolish these houses as it’s not safe but people refuse to move and would “rather die in their house” than move out. Others move only temporarily and come back when the water recedes. The government is tired man. 😅

Pamela ZIMBA, be accountable for your own actions! YOU decided to build there! You cannot blame who "allowed you", for while you claim you were "allowed", the initial decision to build there was yours. If you had not thought of building there in the first place, you would not be talking about "being allowed".

The lake claiming it's lost glory. Think of those that stopped government implementing SALIMA - LILONGWE Water Project. Their reason was Lake Malawi would eventually dry. Why not put blame to those people? Nature is beyond our control and we as people should stop blame game.

We enjoy taking unnecessary risks and refuse to take the blame when disaster strikes. It's a good thing government did not yield to their selfish demand that would have caused problems to others downstream. If they like, let them go sue whoever it was that convinced them that was a good place to settle.
