Lake Powell as risen a staggering 65 feet in a three month period, while sending an average of 18000 cubic feet per second down to Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam continuously. The Glen Canyon Dams daily releases during the month of July has been fluctuating from a low of approximately 16,000 cfs during the early morning hours to a high of 19,500 cfs during the evening hours. This is an above average amount of water entering the lower basin.
Lake Powell has declined 1.44 feet since the reservoir as hit its base flow period. Glen Canyon Dam has continuously been releasing water downstream at rates averaging 18500 Cfs to Lake Mead in order to replenish the water that was held back in 2022.
The Bureau of Reclamation held off obligated water owed to Lake Mead to prevent the Glen Canyon Dam from hitting its minimum power pool back in 2022. Now obligations need to be met of 9.50 million acer feet which depending on circumstances could be 9.04 millions of acre feet.
We shall expect Lake Mead to continue its rise as Lake Powell will began to drop. Thus the Glen Canyon Dam has so far released a grand total of 6,778,768 MAF which is 71.35 % released of the 9.50 million acre feet needed to replenish Lake Mead. Based on projections from the bureau of reclamation, lake Powell we can assume depending on inflow factors of Lake Powell to drop another 28 feet before we see another rise. Only time will tell.
The water year of 2023 has been quite generous and many iconic spots are operable and usable. This includes state line launch ramp Wahweap launch ramp in Lone Rock has now been completely surrounded with water. People have dared to go through the castle rock cut and have succeeded but this shortcut will unfortunately be landlocked yet again due being 3 ft deep in places.

Your making me sad that I sold my boat last year!! I bought a cabin cruiser in 2019 only to be able to get it on the water that and the next year.. I didn't think I'd be able to use it anymore because Powell is the only place I'd care to sail! I'm actually happy that it's refilling! It's the most beautiful body of water I've ever been on "and I was in the Navy"!

Per the Park Service, the ramp at Bullfrog is expected to be out of service again by the end of August 23'. The reservoir is still below 40% full. Total gain at peak of inflow was 65-feet, its now dropping in elevation again.

I remember Travis Lake going dry... All the clamoring... Bodies and stolen cars appeared. You could walk across parts of the lake. They said it would take decades to recover...if ever. The next year, record rainfall and it's all been forgotten about. History repeats itself.

Nice work. There's quite a lot to process from those few minutes of video, Sir Des. Powell is now 1.9 feet down over the last 14 days as it releases water to help prop up its best mate, Lake Mead. Actually, they seem to be sending twice as much downstream as is flowing in. Let's hope nobody gets stuck in Castle Rock Cut as the water drains from underneath them. Rivers feeding Powell are running at 79% of the July 22 average; rivers feeding Navajo are well below average at 43.5%; ditto Flaming George at 61%. The ony major upstream reservoir with higher than average inflows for this time is Blue Mesa on the Gunnison at 117% and that is a tiny body of water, 829,500 af, sat at 7200 feet above sea level. Where did all the water go? That massive snowpack? I reckon it is getting sucked up by the parched landscape, especially at lower elevations. Oh well. Maybe if there is another similarly wet winter 23/24 the ground won't be so thirsty and more water will end up in the blessed reservoirs. Anyway, the folks at Mead will be dancing on the beaches in the 116 degree heat as they watch their reservoir coming up 14 inches every seven days. "WOOT, WOOT, PRAISE THE LORD!" Meanwhile, the BoR is thinking, "We have 69 days left to get enough water into Mead so it can release its 9 maf before Sept 30th. We are 81% through the Water Year and Mead has dumped only 70% of what is required by The Law." With too little water in the system, it is always a frantic juggling act to comply with the terms of the 1922 Compact and keep the leisure industry/economy happy. From what I gather there is going to be a serious overhaul of the 1922 Compact in 2025. Ha, good luck with that.

Thanks Dave! They I'm expecting a 30 foot drop until next May. That's my educated guess.

i have my doubts that neither lakes mead or powell will ever attain "full pool" ever again.....mother nature acts in mysterious ways...i hope I'm wrong...both are national treasures ....lets hope the powers that be realize this and make common sense decisions to protect this amazing resource

It would probaby look rather messy. Anyway, as long as the Colorado still flows it is impossible for Powell to completely dry up. The lowest it can go is ~3370 ie another 150 feet lower than it was in these March 2023 pics. This is the elevation of the 'River Outlets' that so spectacularly discharged all that water in the recent High Flow Experiment.
