Lake Powell as risen a staggering 65 feet in a three month period, while sending an average of 18000 cubic feet per second down to Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam continuously. The Glen Canyon Dams daily releases during the month of July has been fluctuating from a low of approximately 16,000 cfs during the early morning hours to a high of 19,500 cfs during the evening hours. This is an above average amount of water entering the lower basin.
Lake Powell has declined 1.44 feet since the reservoir as hit its base flow period. Glen Canyon Dam has continuously been releasing water downstream at rates averaging 18500 Cfs to Lake Mead in order to replenish the water that was held back in 2022.
The Bureau of Reclamation held off obligated water owed to Lake Mead to prevent the Glen Canyon Dam from hitting its minimum power pool back in 2022. Now obligations need to be met of 9.50 million acer feet which depending on circumstances could be 9.04 millions of acre feet.
We shall expect Lake Mead to continue its rise as Lake Powell will began to drop. Thus the Glen Canyon Dam has so far released a grand total of 6,778,768 MAF which is 71.35 % released of the 9.50 million acre feet needed to replenish Lake Mead. Based on projections from the bureau of reclamation, lake Powell we can assume depending on inflow factors of Lake Powell to drop another 28 feet before we see another rise. Only time will tell.
The water year of 2023 has been quite generous and many iconic spots are operable and usable. This includes state line launch ramp Wahweap launch ramp in Lone Rock has now been completely surrounded with water. People have dared to go through the castle rock cut and have succeeded but this shortcut will unfortunately be landlocked yet again due being 3 ft deep in places.
