Hi, folks! Thank you for finding the original, HD version of the Lake Superior Ice Stacking video! We're grateful that millions of people around the globe appreciate this winter weather treasure. *We're seeking your helpful suggestions.* We initially posted this abbreviated version to appeal to the short viewing habits of social media. We are encouraged by reading many comments here and on Facebook seeking a longer version, which is our personal preference as well. Before producing a longer version, we'd like to know which segments you'd want to view longer, and whether you'd prefer a compilation style video or have separate videos showing longer segments of each perspective. Please let us know what you'd like! ~Dawn & Gary If you subscribe to our KZbin channel and follow our Facebook page, you'll receive notification when we release the extended version. In the meantime, please visit our online photography gallery at: radiantspiritgallery.photoshelter.com/gallery-list

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to stay in one of the hotels in Canal Park, Duluth. I had a chance to see some of this while I was there. I drove up along the northern short of the lake and was blown away by the miles and miles of these shattered ice shards glittering in the sunshine. It was not an active event when I saw it, so I really was not sure how it came to be like that. I really appreciate your video, because it shows exactly how it occurs. Thanks for sharing.

That was fascinating. How long does it take the stacked ice to melt? That was really neat. Thank you for sharing.
@RadiantSpiritGallery8 жыл бұрын
+Melinda Hollis, thank you for watching. That's a difficult question to answer. Sometimes the wind changes direction and takes a lot of the ice back out onto the lake, so we don't see it melt. It also depends on how tall and dense the stacks of ice are; they can be 10+ feet tall some years. Due to our mild winter, I don't think we'll see record-breaking stack height, but we're grateful we had some ice and were able to witness this event.
@caroljmcbr8 жыл бұрын
+Melinda Hollis Metl? It's winter. In Duluth. Try spring.
@MelindaHollis8 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, I am aware of that. I was wondering if it was stacked high enough and if it was cold enough that it would still be around in April or May, or if it was warm enough for the ice to be moving did that mean it would melt soon. +RadiantSpiritGallery's response was more than enough for me to understand that it's not always visible. It is a fascinating video and a pretty amazing fact that they could film it so that someone from the Midwest (like me) could see it. Because I probably never would otherwise. To be honest, I hadn't even considered the fact that the Great Lakes would be cold enough to freeze. So I am completely mesmerized by this video. Thank you again, RadiantSpiritGallery for posting it.

Are there public records of the dates when this phenomenon happens each year? Was it earlier this year? If so, perhaps the ice was thinner this year if the winter was warmer, and broke up earlier. Perhaps it could be part of the data of global warming.
@RadiantSpiritGallery8 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Meeks I doubt that those types of records are kept since these events often go unnoticed, particularly during the night. This event was not caused by spring melting - it had been subzero leading up to the event and too early for spring melt. Since Lake Superior is too large to freeze completely, when wind or waves cause the large ice sheets to move around periodically, they are shoved into a shoreline and stack like this. This winter was more mild than usual though and did not produce much ice cover on the lake and the ice did not become very thick.
